Yeah... *sigh* it wasn't that good imo :(

I'll give it a few more listens though as I do with most everything.

just finished listening to this. It was good, not great. I enjoyed most of the songs. Few songs i didn't care for, but overall, pretty decent.

nothing on Port of Morrow is really grabbing me on first listen. :?

I was blown away by Mercers work with Broken Bells so I'm feeling a little let down.. I'll just have to give it some more time ..

i'm not sure why anyone would've expected any different....but yeah, this album is total weak sauce in my opinion. but i was totally prepared for it.

chutes too narrow was one of the best albums of the last decade. then wincing came out 4 years or so later and was okay, but certainly a major drop off from the previous albums. the broken bells album was boring and disposable. mercer could pump out tracks like that in his sleep. problem is there is just nothing memorable or particularly great about them.

...and then they hype up this album of ten songs (their first in 5 years) and only their 4th album as a band in 11 years for what seemed to be an eternity...and right on que it'll be a major disappointment to the fans. i'm starting to think that the reason why these guys take so long to release anything is because they are seriously lacking in creativity and/or inspiration.

but like i said, i was prepared for this albums sucking, so i'm not too disappointed. if you take it for what it is, there are actually like 3 or 4 songs on this album that i could see myself jamming to for a couple weeks. but that's the max. i will probably never think of this album again after two months have passed. and that's all this album deserves, about two months. and that's being generous.

    Pretty much agree
  • wincing is underrated. i loved and love that album. Any album that has songs like Sleeping lessons, Split Needles, Sea Legs, Australia, and A comet Appears is top notch in my book.

I havent listened to the new album, im waiting for a higher quality leak to appear, but i posited in this thread my worry that in the years since wincing, james became a father. and seems reasonably happy. So much of their music revolves around a catchy as hell pop song melody, paired with james' existential crisis lyrics. All their best songs have this about them. Hopefully when im 50 and am beyond my quarter life crisis, i can look back, and recognize what i feel is true, that the shins pretty much describe my 20's year by year to the t.

What i like about james, and people like Isaac Brock, Sam Beam, Conor Oberst, all underrated lyricists and musician, is they seem as unsure about life and themselves as i do.

Im not one of those people who thinks great art only comes from pain and suffering and depressed artists, and my own art proves this. I cant really write when im depressed or create. But its the type of art im most attracted to.

With james i wonder if this seeming stablizing aspects of his life, being married, and now a father, are ultimately at the heart of why this album seems to be polarizing. Ive heard people dislike it, and ive heard the complete opposite, that its great and will appear on many best of 2012's lists. I cant wait to give it a listen.

i agree. he's another one of those guys similar to james in that he disappeared for awhile. well james has been working with Broken Bells so i guess he never was gone. But isaac brock really hasnt been heard from since "we were dead" in 2007 was it? Im eager to hear the next MM album, but i really havent heard anything about a release date. Crazy rumor from last year was that Big Boi of Outkast was producing the new MM album

I've heard reports of them working on a new album. They've done a few shows and played some new material... That last album was really, really bad.

While the new album isn't doing anything for me, I completely disagree with you. Wincing the Night Away is probably my favorite album of all time, more so than any Pearl Jam album and Broken Bells is probably in my top 10.. In my opinion their first two albums were only ok with a few good songs.

well then i respectfully disagree with your taste.

honestly though, wincing the night and broken bells are in your top ten albums of all time? that's unfortunate for you. some one really needs to start throwing some album recommendations your way.

Not sure how anyone could think this album is weak. :? I think it's incredible. '40 Mark Strasse' is an amazingly beautiful song. There aren't really any bad songs on this album either. 'Simple Song', 'No Way Down', 'Fall of 82'...all great songs. This might be their most complete album, IMO. I love all the old albums, but there's always a couple songs I can't get into. Port of Morrow is a strong album. 8-)

Ehhh... It's alright. It's missing something from their previous records that I really like. Can't put my finger on it.
  • its definitely different. different sounding and a different vibe. Only a few songs with the trademark james mercer existentialist lyrics, which are a main reason why i love the band. oddly, he left off 2 songs, the ones you can get on itunes, which are the most explicitly existentialist lyrics. The last song is that james singing? the voice sounds nothing like his
