Red Hot Chili Peppers ripped off Tom Petty?

i think it's a coincidence, and that's about it. i don't think it's an obvious ripoff at all, i didn't even think of the two songs sounding similar until i saw this thread. i do think that the video for dani california is one of the stupidest and worst videos the RHCPs have ever put out. what the hell? i know it's supposed to be funny and all, but it gets on my nerves every time i see it.

i can't stand the video as well. What's funny though is that was watching the music video and i swear to god, the VJ says "wow, great video from RHCP there. It's really hip and in these days for guys to wear makeup. Just look at all these videos, Green Day, Good Charlotte, yada yada yada ... RHCP. They're all wearing makeup, that's really in fashion for guys today"

at this point i was just about ready to throw a brick through the tv. The VJ actually took the vid seriously and then goes on to talk about the stupidest most pointless shit ever. I now vow never to watch another music video on that channel again.

Double albums produce these type of lazy songs...

Check out the riff at the end of Give It Away when the song kicks back in and then listen to the riff in Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath.

this isn't a blatant rip off, however, it should have been caught b y the producer or some one for fuck's sake that it was the same tune as Petty's. Some times when i make my own guitar stuff i'll listen to it later and find a similarity to some other song that i've heard. It's weird how it just seeps into your self conscious without you knowing.

Either way the lead single off the Pepper's latest album is a complete ripoff. Same producer. Same song. First time I heard it I could tell the Peppers had copped the melody but it wasn't until i heard one played over the other that I realized they were f-cked.

How hard is it to change the tempo of a song you are stealing? This would lead me to believe it was an accident but with Rick Rubin in the room I can't figure out how it could be a mistake.
