If you were to strum them they are very much alike, but the arrangements make them very different. They dont even sound much alike imo. Definitely not a ripoff.
  • This is a blatant rip off.

You are an idiot then. John Frusciante needs to rip off nobody. EVERY riff is done, every progression done. It's all about melody.

I dont think its blatant, but he had to think, "this really sounds like somethin".

I disagree that every riff and progression has been done.

okay, so i saw this thread and thought to myself, "no fucking way". but after hearing the clips, the comparisons are pretty damning. it isn't a blatant rip off like some are saying, RHCP have always done their own thing. Frusciante has got more integrity than to rip off another song, do u honestly think he heard it then thought that he'd copy it to make another hit single?

Both songs were produced by Rick Rubin.

Frusciante is a great guitar player, but obviously not the musical genious alot of people think he is. Some people actually think all of his stuff is totally original????

i think it's a coincidence, and that's about it. i don't think it's an obvious ripoff at all, i didn't even think of the two songs sounding similar until i saw this thread. i do think that the video for dani california is one of the stupidest and worst videos the RHCPs have ever put out. what the hell? i know it's supposed to be funny and all, but it gets on my nerves every time i see it.
my favorite pearl jam songs: (in no order)
    animal

    spin the black circle
    hail hail

    ghost

  • As soon as I saw the title I knew which two songs you were talking about. Wether or not it's intentional there's no denying the fact that the songs are the same.

i can't stand the video as well. What's funny though is that was watching the music video and i swear to god, the VJ says "wow, great video from RHCP there. It's really hip and in these days for guys to wear makeup. Just look at all these videos, Green Day, Good Charlotte, yada yada yada ... RHCP. They're all wearing makeup, that's really in fashion for guys today"

at this point i was just about ready to throw a brick through the tv. The VJ actually took the vid seriously and then goes on to talk about the stupidest most pointless shit ever. I now vow never to watch another music video on that channel again.

    Bummer.

Doesn't sound like something Frusciante would do, however.

Check out the riff at the end of Give It Away when the song kicks back in and then listen to the riff in Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath.

yeh that's a pretty popular one...i think they got permission to use the riff?
well maybe not but I remember John saying how Sweet Leaf inspired him to come up with the riff.

This is nowhere near a ripoff, IMO. After listening to both FULL songs, extensively, they are completely different. Honestly, you can't base this off a 10-second clip, and the Tom Petty song is sped up as well. That little segment is all that sounds alike, the rest is obviously different. Actually listen to both full songs in a row, I think you'll find they're really not alike much at all.
Either way, Stadium Arcadium is a great album.

this isn't a blatant rip off, however, it should have been caught b y the producer or some one for fuck's sake that it was the same tune as Petty's. Some times when i make my own guitar stuff i'll listen to it later and find a similarity to some other song that i've heard. It's weird how it just seeps into your self conscious without you knowing.

    Rick Ruben produced both songs.

Either way the lead single off the Pepper's latest album is a complete ripoff. Same producer. Same song. First time I heard it I could tell the Peppers had copped the melody but it wasn't until i heard one played over the other that I realized they were f-cked.

How hard is it to change the tempo of a song you are stealing? This would lead me to believe it was an accident but with Rick Rubin in the room I can't figure out how it could be a mistake.
  • "and the Tom Petty song is sped up as well. "

I noticed that too. It's no big deal. Lot's of songs have the same chord progressions. This one also just happens to have the same melody and beat.

Still not as irritating as Shakira's Bangles rip off. That one was just hideous.

"So I made a mistake, ONE mistake, can't a man start over?! DO I HAVE TO KEEP PAYING?! Maybe I should make another mistake... maybe I should make two."
