    The question should be about the intention, ie. did they mean to rip it or is it a fluke.

    I knew that song sounded really familiar! I just couldn't put my finger on what it sounded like...Now I know. I can't believe I didn't notice because I love Mary Jane's Last Dance. It's exactly the same song!

    the tom petty version was pretty popular when it came out. and yes, its the same exact song. the only difference i hear is the red hot chili peppers play it a bit flat.

    in the Stadium Arcadium dvd though..John Frusciante actually explained how he came up with the riff while listening to the Wu Tang Clan or something so i think it was unintentional.

    and yes Mary Jane's Last Dance is a pretty popular song I'd say.

    I agree, there is a slight difference, but wow, it's really interesting to hear.

    THere is also a song on their album that the opening riff sounds a LOT like the mountain song by Janes Addiction.

    I forget the song but my roomate heard it too.

    i found this link in a different forum last night and laughed pretty hard when they played both the songs at the same time. same tempo, mostly the same drums, and just about the same chords. same style of singing as well. pretty funny
