That is pretty funny.
The question should be about the intention, ie. did they mean to rip it or is it a fluke.
Is the Tom Petty tune famous in the US?0 -
I knew that song sounded really familiar! I just couldn't put my finger on what it sounded like...Now I know. I can't believe I didn't notice because I love Mary Jane's Last Dance. It's exactly the same song!
Wow, whether it was conscious or not, it's a rip-off..."This is another sing-a-long." - Eddie Vedder before singing Lukin live at Madison Square Garden.0 -
the tom petty version was pretty popular when it came out. and yes, its the same exact song. the only difference i hear is the red hot chili peppers play it a bit flat.lay down all thoughts; surrender to the void

I can't get the link to open. What RHPC song are they talking about?0
-
in the Stadium Arcadium dvd though..John Frusciante actually explained how he came up with the riff while listening to the Wu Tang Clan or something so i think it was unintentional.
and yes Mary Jane's Last Dance is a pretty popular song I'd say.LIVERPOOL FC -18 time League Champions-15 time Charity Shield Holders-7 time League Cup Winners-7 time FA Cup Winners-5 time European Champions-4 time UEFA Cup Winners-3 time European Super Cup Winners-1 time World Super Cup Winners

THere is also a song on their album that the opening riff sounds a LOT like the mountain song by Janes Addiction.
I forget the song but my roomate heard it too.Charlotte 00 | Charlotte 03 | Asheville 04 | Atlanta 12 | Greenville 16 | Columbia 16 |Seattle 18 | Nashville 22 | Ohana Festival 24 x2 | Atlanta 25 x20 -

Try this, it's the song Tom Petty - Mary Jane's Last Dance with the voice of Kiedis.

There are a number of songs on Stadium that are overtly borrowing from other songs...so much so that it's clearly a nod to those bands...like a new form of covering.
Pettty, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mountain, Metallica to name a few<a href="http://www.shawnsmithsinger.com">Shawn Smith</a> / <a href="http://www.thebandbrad.com">Brad</a> / <a href="http://www.allhailthecrown.com">All Hail the Crown</a> / <a href="http://www.satchelpartnership.com">Satchel</a>

you could go on and on, but those songs should be in a different thread....lay down all thoughts; surrender to the void

i found this link in a different forum last night and laughed pretty hard when they played both the songs at the same time. same tempo, mostly the same drums, and just about the same chords. same style of singing as well. pretty funny0

Thanks for the link.
Is there a mash-up for this yet?
