Jeff Buckley is the hipsters' answer to Kurt Cobain.

and the question would be.....what exactly?

I think Jeff Buckley was a better songwriter than Kurt Cobain. Kurt just got lucky because he k.... no, I won't go there it gets ugly.

it got ugly the moment you tried to be amusing. bad form hlf***. :(

Cornell wrote some good songs. I really liked his stuff with soundgarden and i dug some other stuff he has done. That being said he is no where near teh best singer/songwriter in the last 15 years. not by a mile.

Obviously i love what eddie vedder has done and i think his lyrics are way better then cornell's, but my favorite of the last 15 years has to be Jeff Tweedy of Uncle Tupelo and Wilco.

Now i'm not going to say he is the best because there are some great songwriters out there, but he is problaby my favorite and I do think he is better then Cornell.... a LOT better.

If you've never taken the time to listen to Wilco your problayb like whatever he is just saying that to be hip... If i wanted to be hip I could say jeff mangum (not downing him i like his work a lot too) i would think he would be a "hip" pitchfork pick.

melodyman22 is obviously adamant on this one... :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

    Jeff Buckley, probably

    Around now?

    Damien Rice, Jose Gonzalez

Man I've been editing this a lot. Sorry. Just rememberd.

Hands down, best of 15 years (yes, I know he's older, but he's still around): Tom Waits.
does jose gonzalez even write his own songs? all the songs I've heard from him are covers. add to that the fact that his voice is just a whisper.

good call on tom waits though.

    Easy.....

I'm not about to crown him the best songwriter of the last 15 years myself the guy has only put out one album and an ep to my knowledge, but i think it is unfair to ask if he writes his own songs. He had one cover on the EP and one cover on the album. If those are the only songs of his you have heard you are missing out because his stuff is very good :)

Good point on the one album thing. But if Jose does three great ones, he's already better than Kurt Cobain in my books. We'll have to see!

  • I never said he was a bad songwriter due to his voice. My point is that singer-songwriter is about both aspects, so even if he did write better than Lennon and Morrisson combined, he still wouldn't be a great singer-songwriter because he can't sing.
    Tom Waits is awesome.

    Quick answer...no.

He's good, and a great singer, but not the best songwriter.

    Singer yes. Songwriter, probably not.

  • I definitely think he's right up there. His voice isn't "shot" like a lot of people think, it's just changed. He can't hit the high screechy notes anymore, but honestly, that didn't make him the best singer/songwriter, it was his particular style and most of all his lyrics. Black Hole Sun or Like A Stone anyone? I wouldn't necessarily say he is THE best of the last 15 years, but he and Ed rank pretty high. I don't know if I would even put Eddie in first place, simply because of the ridiculous amount of bias I have toward him. I would need to think a bit more before coming up with an answer to that one.

  • I think his work with Audioslave has ruined his reputation a little, because Audioslave are shit.
