i´ve checked some message boards here, and is amazing how many people consider how great liricist, songwriter, vocalist is cornell and i agree with that...

songs like sunshine, slaves and bulldozers, like suicide, like suicide, sunshower, like a stone, reach down, when i´m down, sweet euphoria, 1 zero and Say hello to heaven are rock classics...

He is one of my favourite singer/songwritters of the last 15yrs, but to say he is the best would be a bit much.
Can not be arsed with life no more.
  • He's certainly written some of the best songs of the past 15 years, Seasons being my very favourite.
  • id say he is one of the best. his lyrics are something else. i really do love almost everything he does.

  • Give him his dues, in the early 90's his voice was jaw-dropping, very few singers are able to express that much passion through their voice AND have unrelenting power and range too. Songwriting on the other hand is totally subjective, and what works for some doesn't work for others.

All true, yes, but the early 90s are long gone and other, much better song-writers have emerged since. The question asked was whether CC was the best sing/songwriter in 15 years.

    Jeff Buckley, probably

    Around now?

    Damien Rice, Jose Gonzalez

Man I've been editing this a lot. Sorry. Just rememberd.

Hands down, best of 15 years (yes, I know he's older, but he's still around): Tom Waits.

i'd put Jeff in there as well

also Jack White for me.... i think he's an amzing musician!!

as a plain old songwriter then Noel Gallagher is brilliant... not technically or fuck all like that.. but he can build beautiful melodies and compositions out of ancient well-used chords, and thats a great skill to have!!

    Thom Yorke??

Jeff Buckley is the hipsters' answer to Kurt Cobain.

And Tom Waits? The question was over singer/songwriter. Even if Tom Waits wrote the best songs the world has ever heard (which he doesn't), his voice is a nightmare come true.

As for Chris, he definitely ranks up there, though his voice has lost some of its luster over the years. He does sound the best I've heard him in a long, long time from that acoustic swedish gig though. I think he had a better range than Ed and was the best pure rock vocalist who came out of the 90s but I'd give Ed the edge when it comes to lyrics.

I think Jeff Buckley was a better songwriter than Kurt Cobain. Kurt just got lucky because he k.... no, I won't go there it gets ugly.

And saying Tom Waits isn't a genius songwriter just because he's got a strange voice is like saying Picasso wasn't a genius painter just because his faces weren't painted with the correct proportions.

I never said he was a bad songwriter due to his voice. My point is that singer-songwriter is about both aspects, so even if he did write better than Lennon and Morrisson combined, he still wouldn't be a great singer-songwriter because he can't sing.

Cornell wrote some good songs. I really liked his stuff with soundgarden and i dug some other stuff he has done. That being said he is no where near teh best singer/songwriter in the last 15 years. not by a mile.

Obviously i love what eddie vedder has done and i think his lyrics are way better then cornell's, but my favorite of the last 15 years has to be Jeff Tweedy of Uncle Tupelo and Wilco.

Now i'm not going to say he is the best because there are some great songwriters out there, but he is problaby my favorite and I do think he is better then Cornell.... a LOT better.

If you've never taken the time to listen to Wilco your problayb like whatever he is just saying that to be hip... If i wanted to be hip I could say jeff mangum (not downing him i like his work a lot too) i would think he would be a "hip" pitchfork pick.

does jose gonzalez even write his own songs? all the songs I've heard from him are covers. add to that the fact that his voice is just a whisper.

good call on tom waits though.

    Easy.....

I'm not about to crown him the best songwriter of the last 15 years myself the guy has only put out one album and an ep to my knowledge, but i think it is unfair to ask if he writes his own songs. He had one cover on the EP and one cover on the album. If those are the only songs of his you have heard you are missing out because his stuff is very good :)
