pearl jam is charging $70-$80 a ticket because that is the MAXIMUM they can charge....and still fill the venues...

if pearl jam even thought of charging $100-$200 a ticket.....they would be playing in front of 2000-3000 people....

just a fact.....this band isnt anywhere near as popular as they were 10-12 years ago....

and their album sales prove it....

    True this
    I will swallow poison
  • maybe they played the market too much(Camden) and the Gorge was too fuckin hot for human beings, lol

Another thing to remember is that they played 2 nights in East Rutherford within a few days of the Camden shows. Only about an hour to an hour and a half from Camden. (CAMDEN, I ENJOY POINTING OUT, IS NEW JERSEY, NOT PHILADELPHIA AS MANY WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE! :)) Plus, you had the 2 Borgata shows and Wachovia (WHICH IS ACTUALLY IN PHILLY) the year before. We have been blessed with 7 NJ shows since 2003. I'd say the band is selling quite well in these parts, and nearly on a yearly basis.

Exactly, in the Ten era they were playing small arenas, now large ones, their fan base has grown AND solidified, next tour Pearl Jam should try it out, $100 tix and they WILL sell out, lol i said Pearl Jam will sell-out,lol

Well considering Cinnci 06 wasn't sold out....I would think again.

I do not think Tom Petty or Rod Stewart are more popular than Pearl Jam and they get more for their tickets.......
Um, yeah, Rod Stewart's last few albums have all been multi-platinum. They've been steaming piles of shit full of safe, crappy covers, but still extremely successful. PJ, how I love em, haven't had a platinum album since 98.

I would probably put Tom Petty on the same plane as PJ, popularity-wise.

    Just sayin is all.

PS I'm going to see one of my favorite touring bands, The Hold Steady, Thursday night for $16, fees and all. Again, just sayin is all.
  • also, keep in mind that an older fan base (Petty, Rod Stewart, Police) can afford more expensive tickets, as older people generally have more $$.

While we are hardly a teenaged fan base anymore, i don't believe PJ would sell nearly as many tix if they were priced comparatively to those mentioned above.

My parents are going to see the Police (again) and are psyched about it, and I'd love to go with them, but not for those prices!

Most shows were not sold out in 2006. Grand Rapids, Cleveland & Detroit all had curtains in the back. Face it they are nowhere near what they once were. I dont care they are still my favorite band, I dont need tickets to be as hard to get as they were in the early nineties to validate my favorite band.

If they charged $100/ticket i would go to my hometown show but the traveling to other shows would be out. There are other things I would rather spend that money on.

Ticket price doesn't bother me at all. I don't have a lot of money if any really but this is something that I treat myself to. I work three jobs and my wife works two and we spend our money on bills and food. This is a little us time so I don't care.

What is the cost of gas in 08?

yup, ROD efffin STEWART. a beach in brazil 3.5 MILLION PEOPLE. the sound at the back mustve sucked hahahah.

from wiki:"On 31st December on the same year he played in front on 3.5 million people on Copacabana Beach in Rio. This became and still is the largest audience for a gig ever. It has been noted, however, that it was also New Year's Eve."

People who go and see Rod Stewart will be of a wider range of people and go and see 1 show and that'll be it.

People who go and see Pearl Jam will be of a smaller group of people and see multiple shows (well more willing to at least)... hence wanting to spend less on each show.
not only that, but the people that go and see acts like rod stewart and the police consist largely of people like my parents. they are in their fifties with money to spend. I am not saying everyone in their fifties have money to spend, but some do. and a $150 or $200 ticket isn't anything to them.

I was gonna make this same argument. I work in transportation and the monthly increases due to rising gas prices still amazes me.

In 2003 we were at a 7-8% fuel surcharge on all goods shipped. Now, we're at 27-30% fuel surcharge. We can barely afford to ship anything anymore.

i dont know if this has been said already, but rod stewart, tom petty, rolling stones, etc are all much older bands. they are more famous and are of course going to cost more. imagine how expensive PJ tickets will be in 10 years. if it happens.

I think the price I paid today for Columbia tickets ($70 a piece) was extremely reasonable for PJ in a small venue in the south (18,000). I did not feel 'ripped off' in any way.

An interesting comparison (to me) would be I saw Built to Spill at a local venue in Charlotte NC 2 weeks ago for $16 a ticket. It was not anywhere near sold out....A quality band by any measure (and a wonderful show....).

What's the diff here? The SCALE of the effort needed to mount these shows and take them on the road....It's not done for free...how many people do you think "Hot Rod" takes on the road?

Built to Spill was a small show, in a small market, by a band that is highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike, but is largely unknown by the masses. So they travel light and charge little...

PJ has crews to pay just like the BIG shows like Rod Stewert (gag)...

    Just sayin...

Are you kidding me? They have been around forever and have huge fan bases. Tom Petty could sell out almost anywhere and it's mostly because his fan base has a huge range of age. I know people 15 who like Petty and I know people 65 who like Petty. And I think Rod had a number 1 album last year that sold millions of copies.

wow...i honestly would never have guessed. I love Tom Petty and don't know anyone else who really likes him. When they chose him to play at the Superbowl, CBS (who I work for) got so many complaints!

and I thought Rod Stewart faded out years ago....shows you what I know.

If the Ten Club is accurate, Pearl Jam's prices for this tour are certainly competitive with the average price of arena shows.

It just sucks a little that they didn't give the info before tickets went on-sale. Nice job staying under the HUGE costs of other acts, though.
