  • i know you're being sarcastic but Rod Stewart appeals to a much wider audience...

People who go and see Rod Stewart will be of a wider range of people and go and see 1 show and that'll be it.

People who go and see Pearl Jam will be of a smaller group of people and see multiple shows (well more willing to at least)... hence wanting to spend less on each show.
not only that, but the people that go and see acts like rod stewart and the police consist largely of people like my parents. they are in their fifties with money to spend. I am not saying everyone in their fifties have money to spend, but some do. and a $150 or $200 ticket isn't anything to them.

    There's your offset.

    End of story.

I was gonna make this same argument. I work in transportation and the monthly increases due to rising gas prices still amazes me.

In 2003 we were at a 7-8% fuel surcharge on all goods shipped. Now, we're at 27-30% fuel surcharge. We can barely afford to ship anything anymore.

i dont know if this has been said already, but rod stewart, tom petty, rolling stones, etc are all much older bands. they are more famous and are of course going to cost more. imagine how expensive PJ tickets will be in 10 years. if it happens.

I think the price I paid today for Columbia tickets ($70 a piece) was extremely reasonable for PJ in a small venue in the south (18,000). I did not feel 'ripped off' in any way.

An interesting comparison (to me) would be I saw Built to Spill at a local venue in Charlotte NC 2 weeks ago for $16 a ticket. It was not anywhere near sold out....A quality band by any measure (and a wonderful show....).

What's the diff here? The SCALE of the effort needed to mount these shows and take them on the road....It's not done for free...how many people do you think "Hot Rod" takes on the road?

Built to Spill was a small show, in a small market, by a band that is highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike, but is largely unknown by the masses. So they travel light and charge little...

PJ has crews to pay just like the BIG shows like Rod Stewert (gag)...

    Just sayin...

Are you kidding me? They have been around forever and have huge fan bases. Tom Petty could sell out almost anywhere and it's mostly because his fan base has a huge range of age. I know people 15 who like Petty and I know people 65 who like Petty. And I think Rod had a number 1 album last year that sold millions of copies.

wow...i honestly would never have guessed. I love Tom Petty and don't know anyone else who really likes him. When they chose him to play at the Superbowl, CBS (who I work for) got so many complaints!

and I thought Rod Stewart faded out years ago....shows you what I know.

If the Ten Club is accurate, Pearl Jam's prices for this tour are certainly competitive with the average price of arena shows.

It just sucks a little that they didn't give the info before tickets went on-sale. Nice job staying under the HUGE costs of other acts, though.

Built to Spill who I like and have seen in NY is a hard sell here on most of the east coast..Especially southeast..
