I knew that Tragically Hip, Nickelback, Matt Good, Thornley/Big Wreck, Our Lady Peace, Moist....RUSH - shudder.... mentions were inevitable - clearly not all Canadians can have good taste (sorry - just my opinion)
Anyone who would bash The Hip, Matt Good or Big Wreck probably has never heard:
Tragically Hip - Any cd really
Matthew Good - Beautiful Midnight
Big Wreck - In Loving Memory of...
These bands have all of the musical qualities I admire from Pearl Jam. Tragically Hip is basically a Canadian Pearl Jam, Matthew Good Band always seems to release their worst songs as singles so you really have to hear entire records, and Big Wreck was some of the best blues based rock I've ever heard. Perhaps listen to some full albums before forming your opions, you may be pleasantly surprised.Which came first,
the bad idea or me befallen by it?0 -

I have heard ALL those CD's - I used to have many Hip CD's but i gave them all away. I have a younger brother who is into all those bands and I think they suck, just ain't my cup of tea anymore....far too WANKY/commercial/classic rock for my tasteIn my world everyone is a pony,
and they all eat rainbows and pooh butterflies!0 -
As always, I would like to chime in with Holly McNarland...
Also, Pilate (a.k.a. Pilot Speed) is very enjoyable...
And my sister's current fave, The Weakerthans.... "Plea From A Cat Named Virtute" is a very cute, yet poignant song...~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~0 -

how did i forget holly, CEG!?!?!0 -
Didn't Gordie say in an interview that Pearl Jam is the Tragically Hip of the south, man that guy has some good quotes.
As for Canadian Music, I personally think for the size of the country we have a lot of great music. Lenord Cohen hasn't been mentioned yet, I love that man's music. Actually just listened to the Nick Cave song from Lenord Cohen's I'm your man soundtrack, pretty sweet."I'll be hanging upside down, and there I will swing, for all e.........tern.............ni..............ty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -

LOL, we couldn't be more opposite on this one. It's kind of funny to me that you don't like classic rock (I absolutely dismiss the terms wanky/commercial for the hip, mgb or big wreck) but you have Sloan on your list. I've always found their albums very commercial sounding. Props on checking out Wintersleep, very good band, very nice fellows as well.Which came first,

Sloan write fun pop songs - Twice Removed is one of the best albums of all time - they may sound commercial/classic rock/wanky BUT they have fun doing it and don't take it too seriously....there is nothing wrong with a good pop tune. Check out my original band list and you should see that the Hip, MGB and Big Wreck just arent bands that would be of ANY interest to me...they are boringIn my world everyone is a pony,

sloan thinks they're supertramp now or something. horrible. twice removed is a masterpiece though.0

Since we are tossing around Canadian bands - I have friends in a couple Canadian bands.....their music doesnt really do anything for me BUT they are a couple good rock bands from the Great White North.....Finger Eleven and Idle Sons. I think some people on this board would enjoy 'em.In my world everyone is a pony,

Dont get me wrong....I can totally appreciate and understand why people LOVE the Hip here, Gord is an AMAZING and captivating frontman and is one of the great personalities in music ....and they do have some great songs - "Its a Good Life If You Dont Weaken" is one of the best songs i have heard in quite some time......i just done feel any sort of emotional connection to there music anymore - they just dont do it for me now. I have seen them in concert MANY times - but i'm in a different place musically now.In my world everyone is a pony,

i can understand...your list seems to have more of an indie feel to it. we're not all going to agree on all bands.no worries, eh?
