The Edge invented a guitar style of his own that has been hugely influential. He is one of a handful of players whose sound is instantly recognizable within a few notes. To say he can't play is ignorant.

Well it might seem biased on a Pearl Jam board but Stone Gossard is my favorite.
    Stone Gossard...riffmeister extraordinaire!

I am a man, I am advanced.....I am the first man to borrow Stone's leather pants!

  • I really like John Lee Hooker a lot too. He had this growly skanky thang going, and you can hear his influence in a lot of later players.
    Music is not a competetion.
  • John Lee hooker is probably my favorite old school blues player. His playing just sounds so raw and dangerous.

Possibly one of the most underrated players out there. Pure awesomeness. There was a clip floating around some time ago, of him playing Life is Fine, on Jools years ago. Hauntingly beautiful. He was very emotional at the end, i guess because of his illness, but omg he still nailed it. Really moving.

and there was a guy called Danny Gatton, aka "The Humbler", who other guitarists used to travel for miles to see to be shocked and awed. I ahev never heard anything, but he is supposed to be the ants nipples !!

My instructor actually took lessons from Danny. Says he is w/o a doubt the best that has ever played. Also that while we are all thinking on the neck..Danny was thinking on and off the neck. I guess you'd have to see him explain that part. lol

  • i'd say as far as straight technical skill goes, there's little competition that can hang with yngwie malmsteen or jason becker, but those are both far from my favorite sounds or styles. i love listening to hendrix because of the soul that meshed so well with the insane talent. also, andy mckee is UNBELIEVABLE. go here and check out any one of these vids/songs (don't worry, none of them are epic 15 minuters or anything ;) ) :

Avoid his eighties stuff like the plague, but I'd definitely recommend all his albums from his second release, The Tumbler (1968) to One World (1977). His latest album, On The Cobbles (2004), is pretty fine, too, although he doesn't like it much.

He was very good friends with Nick Drake, and their styles mesh a lot (though I consider JM the superior guitarist, singer and songwriter).

    Here's some more.

The drum machine is very primitive, but John's playing is beautiful and moving:
