My play feels sloppier than before.....regression before progression?.....maybe I should concentrate harder.

    *shrug*

Sometimes it seems like it's sloppier, but it could be because you're getting better and it seems too easy!

There is regression though. Sometimes you play and try to learn something and get frustrated, then the next day,,,,,,,, there it is!!

You ought to have a metronome, too. GREAT for timing and focus!

Try doing that C# to Db transition. It should be getting easier for you by now, too! :D

I'll have to put some bugs in people's ears that I need a metronome for Christmas. :p

    ...

I don't have another lesson until after the new year! I better keep focused.

I have a Wittner metronome that is about the size of a credit card, adn I have never changed the battery despite a thousand hours of use. You can set the rhythm pattern, triplets, 8ths etc etc, then set the tempo, and I strongly recommend one

You could probably find a free app for your computer that would act as a metronome. I have one for my mac, called Aquanome. Take a peak and see whats out there.

Is it just that i am stupid, or is C# not Db ?? Enharmonic , in fact ?? I'm thinking G# to Db, as in Teen Spirit might be what you mean.
Regression happens when you get tired , but while you sleep, your cerebellum processes your efforts and you are often better the next day, so don't sweat it.
You can't really cram technique, it takes time !!

    ;)

I was figuring someday, Sennin would be learning something and suddenly realize at 3:00 am waking up out of a sound sleep:

Hey!!! C# IS a Db!!! That rat bastaaaad Who's_pearljam? :D

My best advice is the simplest..leave your guitar out all the time..strum it when you are watching tv, bored, grab it like a nervous habit..that way you don't only get the feel when you sit down to practice but have it with you all the time...

    songs to start

    Jeremy intro riff
    Sometimes intro
    Courduroy intro

The hardest part is getting the switches down, then you have to work on your strumming, but it will come together..and thee is no better feeling..

True story. I walk around the house with it. It's easier than putting it down and picking it up 5 seconds later. :D

Good to hear..people who put it away in the case and want to keep it new aren't going to get good. your first guitar should always be in eyes view..I have logged thousands of hours of practice during commercials or waiting for friends to stop by etc... it works..

Yeah, I did this with my first git, dragged it around everywhere and played constatnyly., still do actually, my acoustic is always out, usually in teh car, so I can play at lunch time if I get a chance, and I have an electric out on a stand all the time, so I can opick it up and do scalses or whatever.
Really good to play in short bursts sometimes, stops your fingers getting too fatigued.

Have you learned the pentatonic scale yet?

Yeah, I've learned a few measures of Em pentatonic. My teacher tabbed out the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.

I found that learning all modes of Em really good, but don't go off a tab.
    Learn the scale,, it's real easy, only one sharp, E F# G A B C D E.
Then start on F# and play it finding the note positions yourself, three notes per string, and saying the note names out loud as you go. This will not only teach you the modes, also teach you teh notes on teh fretboard. Then do teh same thing from G, then A etc.
I did this, and I am musically stupid with a dumbass left brain that is always trying to take over and spoil things, so I'm sure you can.

  • I'm actually starting lessons in the next week or so, I'm pretty damn excited. I know a little stuff like transitioning between G, A, Am, D, C, and Em chords, but thats' pretty much it. Learned it form video.

So any suggestions before I start lessons?

Chromatic scale, just any four notes in a row, starting on an E string and working your way across teh fetbaord, great basic training, co-ordinates left and right hands, sounds too simple to be useful, but it is such a valuable exercise. Basically treaches you to sterr your fingers.
Do it starting on all frets up and down the neck, teaches you about fret spacings as well.

It always gets worse before it gets better especially to your own ears because everybody just wants to be able to play like their idols? I have problems playing in front of people n I have NO idea how to overcome that????

Keep playing in front of people! Friends, family, whatever.
