I'm sure there's been plenty on the message board about this song, but this is just such an amazing, emotional song, and I just wanted to hear people's thoughts on what it means to them

I'm pretty sure the song is about tripping, but it means something different to me.
To me, the song is about the joy of isolation. A lot of times isolation can feel like a cage, but there are also times when it feels secure. That's what In Hiding does for me... it celebrates being by yourself, free to do what you will.... in hiding from all the shit of society. It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win0 -

i'll find the link later, but in all actuality the song is about locking yourself in your house, turning off the lights, shutting the shades, not talking to anyone, and just sleeping and relaxing for like 3 days. ed says that there was an interview with this guy (forgot name) and sean penn did the interview. the guy talks about that in it. he says its like your in hiding from the world around, just being with yourself, but at peace. you are just at peace and alone and sometimes it feels good. by the time you're back on your feetand i nthe world again, you're a new person. it alll makes sense. but i'll find the exact thing on it soon. its a great read and makes the song all the more special. has absolutely nothing to do with drugs. that's also why in the yield booklet it says thanks sean, under the in hiding lyrics.
i'll get back soon with the link

I Stayed Where My Last Step Left Me Ignored All My Rounds
Soon I Was Seeing Visions And Cracks Along The Walls
They Were Upside Down
I Swallowed My Words To Keep From Lying
I Swallowed My Face Just To Keep From Biting
I Swallowed My Breath And Went Deep I Was Diving Diving
I Surfaced And All Of My Being Was Enlightened
~GREATEST LYRICS EVER~And so the lion fell in love with the lamb...,"

When they played this song at the Gorge in '06, it brought tears to my eyes. I feel like it's about my life. I'm a loner, and locking myself away and turning inward is how I cope. Strange how Ed writes songs that are a reflection of our individual lives isn't it? He's just fucking incredible...and so is this song.~I want to realize brotherhood or identity not merely with the beings called human, but I want to realize identity with all life, even with such things as crawl upon earth.~

~I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance than I should have been by any epaulette I could have worn.~

Eddie Vedder's lyrics for the song were inspired by the writings of Charles Bukowski. The reclusive writer was known to stay in a room for days at a time without coming out. The lyric page for the song in the album's liner notes features a quote by Charles Bukowski attributed to "Buk" in place of the lyrics for the song. When asked about the song in an interview, Eddie Vedder stated it was about "a life fast."
Vedder about "In Hiding":
The song was about taking a fast from life, doing anything to get yourself back in touch with something real. Abstinence from anything is cool, because the normalcy of life is deceptive: It's enjoyable for a while, and there are good moments, but sometimes that's not enough. You start questioning what's the point. By not opening my mouth I was able to get into that state. Jack called me at the end of it; he couldn't understand what I was saying. Oh crap, you mean it wasn't about me?
Thanks for the quote, which I agree with (not that it matters). I view it as the same philosophy you find in Verite film. Instead of a director, actors and a script, the camera rolls unfettered, and a story evolves from what the camera has filmed. Verite is French for "truth". "In Hiding" is where I go to find my "truth". It's a good place, a beautiful place and that's why I cried (for what it's worth) when I heard the song live. The song is every bit as beautiful (if not more) as the experience.
I really appreciate seeing what you posted. Thank you!~I want to realize brotherhood or identity not merely with the beings called human, but I want to realize identity with all life, even with such things as crawl upon earth.~

I'm listening to it right now. Yield is my latest discovery, made me fall in love with the band all over again. In Hiding is such a beautiful song... Absolutely flawless."Don't ever let the truth get it the way of telling a good story"0

In Hiding is one of my favorites off of Yield, and it's criminally underplayed.deep, deep blue of the morning
gets to me every time0 -
Absolutely flawless if absolutely right. There are few songs I could ever say that about.
The biggest crime is the fact that on the album they don't let Stone finish like they do live. I have heard that the recent live ones don't let him finish either. Why??? This is literally one of their best songs ever.
When I hear this song live it will be a moment, I'll tell you that.
!!!
Means so much to me, but mostly the life fast thing. I got into this song and album same time I was reading Walden by Thoreau, so that add even more meaning to me as that book was so powerful an influence on my life.I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened.0 -
The song is actually called In Wilding and its about how wild me and my friend Justin areOut of the Blue and Into the Black................Uncle Neil Philly 08 here I come!!!!0

one of my favorites....... recognizing shit isn't as bad as it seems....0

thinking in this right now....you´re in the cage because you want to be in the cage or you want to be in the cage because can´t see other way? So, you´re in the cage definitely? The cage can be your safe port?0 -
Sure, it can!Clara Clareando wrote:thinking in this right now....you´re in the cage because you want to be in the cage or you want to be in the cage because can´t see other way? So, you´re in the cage definitely? The cage can be your safe port?

You´re right. but safe port can be confortable, but can become in something very dangerous if you waste time...sometimes is very difficult way out. I always think you need to be your own safe port.0
