brilliant song...to think this was one of the last ones added to yield...have to give credit to stone for putting together a great melody...great to hear at hartford this year!
It's been about three days now since I've been aground.
"In Hiding" is one of PJ's songs that I identify with most. To me, it's about struggling with depression. Anyone who has struggled with this disease may be able to identify. When depression hits me, it's just like the first verse. I just want to lock myself in my house/room.
After half a lifetime of worshipping PJ, and five years of following them on tour, I finally heard "In Hiding" live at Camden I. The bittersweet moment of it all was that Camdem I was the first show (out of 11) that I attended without my brother. We both struggle with depression, and it's an intimate song for both of us, even though we never really verbalize why.
My brother will be joining me for both shows next week at MSG and also at Hartford. I only pray that they play it again. It just didn't have the same meaning without my brother standing/singing next to me.
I have no idea if "In Hiding" has anything to do with depression. I guess that's one of the special things about PJ. Many of their songs have different meanings for everyone.
But I know this much... "It's funny when things change so much. It's all state of mind."
Great post, ST (I think it's you?)...
IN HIDING is about getting away from the rat race for a while to be with one's own thoughts (there's a Charles Bukowski interview with Sean Penn that I'm sure someone can link you to). However, it could be interpreted to mean getting out of a depression ("I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened") and looking positively towards the future.
Glad you finally got to hear it in person! I'm disappointed that Stone never plays the outtro how he does on the album.
Eddie Vedder's lyrics for the song were inspired by the writings of Charles Bukowski. The reclusive writer was known to stay in a room for days at a time without coming out. The lyric page for the song in the album's liner notes features a quote by Charles Bukowski attributed to "Buk" in place of the lyrics for the song. When asked about the song in an interview, Eddie Vedder stated it was about "a life fast."
Vedder about "In Hiding":
The song was about taking a fast from life, doing anything to get yourself back in touch with something real. Abstinence from anything is cool, because the normalcy of life is deceptive: It's enjoyable for a while, and there are good moments, but sometimes that's not enough. You start questioning what's the point. By not opening my mouth I was able to get into that state. Jack called me at the end of it; he couldn't understand what I was saying. It took a minute to get my speech back
Irons? Had not read that. That's cool though, thanks.
As many times as he's said I was high as hell or stoned as hell in concert, I'm guessing Mary Jane was escaping with him.
You know what's funny is I read a thread a few months ago where someone was saying it was their least fav song and people were joining in ragging on Stone...the worst part about the thread was that the OP said the lyrics didn't "fit" with the song and that the music was sub par. To each his own I guess but after I made a quick post about Stone's good songwriting I had to exit the Pit - I had blog rage. I mean even if you don't get the crazy lyrics, making an argument that the music isn't unbelievably melodic is blasphemous.
Yeild is my favorite album by them. In Hiding barely edges out Faithful as my favorite song on the record. Of my top ten favorite PJ songs, 5 come from this record (DTE, Wishlist, BoJ too).

I really didn't take too much liking to the song when yield first came out...but a few years ago my husband popped in SVT, which i forgot i even had, and just watching it that time made me fall in love with the song like it was brand new...i still feel the same way for that song, such a wonderful song, i can't believe i overlooked in when yield first came out.

It was never a song I liked and would skip often, but I will take another listen to both studio and live version. Maybe I have been missing a great song all these years.

I love to read the interpretations of the lyrics. Brilliant. The one about depression hits home.
The whole concept is a spiritual one as well. The self isolation, and self love, leads to a greater connection with the universe.
