Rise. Life is in motion. I'm stuck in line.
Oh rise. You can't be neutral on a moving train.
One day... the symptoms fade. Think I'll throw these pills away.
And if hope could grow from dirt like me. It can be done.
Won't let the light escape from me.
Won't let the darkness swallow me.0 -
The moments of light in PJ's lyrics are made all the sweeter for their rarity.:)Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0

Those lyrics are some of the happiest to ME personally is what I was saying. It all boils down to the individual journey. You said it yourself.
I know that everytime I hear Faithfull it hits me in a positive way. Then to hear Ed at MSG '03 say "it's faith in something bigger"..."raise a toast to belief!" Exactly! *chills*
Thats what I feel everytime I listen to it!!! Belief. Hope. It just fuckin makes me happy and thats all that matters.
Aww and yes, the LOVE songs! Of course!! Oceans, Thin Air, Parachutes! *faints*

i'm suprised no one has mentioned Rearview Mirror, one of my favorites.
it's about getting away from someone/thing that wasn't good for you and being enlightened by it... i'd say that's a pretty positive song.0 -

With Pearl Jam's lyrics...if this makes sense to you...I always felt there was this deep anger and sadness and whatever other negativity to the songs BUT in most songs..if you pay attention..there's always some minor glimmer of hope or happiness. If that glimmer is not in the lyrics itself, then it's in the ethereal guitar rift or happy drum beat. Anyone else agree?0

There are a lot of songs that have happy endings I guess. They start out with a sad situation, but the song is about fighting out of it. like present tense has a happy message, so to speak-- if things seem like they suck and you don't think they can get better and you have just ruined everything, lean out there and get some sunlight and just start over and it will be better. and I think Around the Bend is a good love song. But as someone else said, grunge music really wasn't ever about the idea that people never frown.0

Spot on man... My friends who aren't Pearl Jam fans say, "Hey man, that music is so depressing." but to me it is reviving because it's like somebody is in the same situation as me, and they are finding hope in something and there is a way out, etc. Nice post man.0 -
I did some more thinking about this after I made my last statement. I liked what somebody else said about the fact that often what stands out in the songs is anger, sadness, or despair, there is often an undertone of hope and the will to fight through it-- I totally agree with that. But I thought about what I once told somebody that asked me why I like "sad" music. I told her that I had once had an English teacher that told me that there are only two types of poetry/plays/etc.: Tragedies and Comedies. In tragedies, the hero dies, and in comedies, the hero gets the girl. I told her that Pearl Jam songs, to me, can often best be described as beautiful tragedies. What I mean by this is even though it is about sadness or despair or whatever other negative feeling, you are still in awe over it because either you feel like the song is talking about exactly what you have felt before, or because it is just so damn beautifully put together but you can't help but admire it. I like to categorize many Pearl Jam songs in their own, third column: Beautiful Tragedies. Kind of like at the end of Armageddon when Bruce Willis dies-- you are glad that the world has been saved, but damn it if you don't feel like sobbing over his death.0
