    Great post Matt! I could think of no better way for the band to enter the last chapter in their storied career than back where it all began: with Dave K behind the kit.

    When I initially heard the news about Matt leaving, my first choice to replace him was my all-time favorite PJ drummer, Jack Irons. But as time passed and I had more time to reflect on it, I realized that choice probably didn’t make the most sense. I don’t see Jack doing extensive touring at this stage of his career.

    Sitting here today, I’d say my top choice would probably be Josh Freese. He’s a bit younger which I think could be good in terms of longevity. Also, I was pretty blown away by him when I saw him with both the Foos and NIN (particularly the latter). However, he obvious doesn’t have the history and relationships with PJ that Dave K does. So I don’t know how he would gel with the other members of the band.

    So I agree with you that Dave K would be a great choice. I think his performance in Fresno demonstrates that he can handle the gig. And it would be a very fitting way for the band to come full circle before they finally hang it up for good. And although I hope that time is a long ways away, I agree with you that I don’t think they’re going to go the legacy act route of the Rolling Stones and play until the wheels fall off. I hope they get back on the road sooner rather than later, so we can enjoy as many shows as possible while they’re still playing at such a high level.

    I read somewhere that Freese was a leading candidate when Jack joined in 94/95.

    His surprise release from Foos does make me wonder if perhaps they got wind of some discussions. Can’t recall, but seems like Matt’s final shows and the Foos announcement were around the same time. Probably just a coincidence.

    What I like about Freese is that he’s demonstrated the versatility the PJ catalog demands. Maybe Krusen has that as well, but I’m not as familiar with his work outside of Ten-era PJ.

    It’s not Dave Krusen.

    Josh Freese is super talented and awesome (as are several other hired gun types like Ilan Rubin, Abe Laboriel or Atom Willard) but at this point in the ride i can’t imagine it not being someone with deep ties to the band. The names that fit that bill are Dave K, Stephen Perkins, Richard Stuverud & Matt Chamberlain. (Or Chad S but can’t see him taking on another full time gig or leaving RHCP).
    I’m wrong all the time so place your bets on Freese 😉

    That's not fair, Ryan.
    Pacer always have good info he shares. That tour was scrapped, as sometimes happens. I trust Pacer.

    I'm any case, even if it's not Dave K
    1. He deserves the love & recognition he's getting on this thread.
    2. Maybe he'll be part of the #Ten35 celebrations.

    Agreed. Pacer is very reliable with his information. Obviously, things changed. But I believe the information was correct when he posted.

    Though I want Josh Freese, I think Perkins is the most likely candidate (based on absolutely nothing but my personal speculation 🤣). IMO Perkins would also be a very good choice.

    What a fantastic post.

    Only thing I want to disagree with is the time left. Not because I think Im right but because I do not ever want to accept there will be a time when this band will not be a thing.

    REM kicked me squarely in the knackers once, in fact I recall RATM first throwing in the towel all those years ago.......I want to believe that PJ will be with me into my retirement. No harm in dreaming right?

    I agree with this 100%. I will never be ready for PJ calling it a day.
    The REM split still hurts, even 14 years later.

  • While Dave would be appropriate and kind of full circle I think it would mean the end would be close so the upside of someone else likely means there's no plans to stop any time soon

    Hey, when it comes to stuff like this, I love being wrong! And I think every band member could keep going until kingdom come.

    But I think they'll all (eventually) catch up to Matt's thinking & reasoning. That, and you want to enjoy your flowers while you're still here. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

    Because anytime I start thinking about the road ahead for the band, I can't ignore the miles:

    Ed = 61 (66 in 5 years)
    Stone = 59 (64 in 5 years)
    Jeff = 62 (67 in 5 years)
    Mike = 59 (64 in 5 years)
    Matt = 63 (68 in 5 years)
    Boom = 72 (retirement is near)

    And just for S&G:

    Dave K = 59 (64 in 5 years)
    Stephen P. = 58 (63 in 5 years)
    Brad W. = 57 (62 in 5 years)
    Chad S. = 64 (69 in 5 years)
    Abe = I'm ruling him out purely because when Macca announces his farewell tour, he's pretty much locked in.

    The only bright side here, is if they decided to go with a new choice (man, or woman...)

    Completely get what you are saying about the age thing.

    My thinking was more if they are thinking about calling it then they might want to go full circle but if not then sentiment isn't a factor

    My line of thinking is about the same.   If they plan to keep going until the rails fall off, they probably want a younger drummer, so if they're still playing at 70, maybe the drummer is only in their 50s kind of thing.

    If they're planning on packing it in, in the not too distant future it may not matter as much.

    It could also be that they aren't sure, but having a young drummer creates more options if they are able to keep playing for a while and become our generations Rollings Stones.

    It's crazy, that they're in their 60s now, and 70 is creeping up.  Really does make you want to see more shows while you can, before you can't :(

    Krusen called away from upcoming shows with new band (Chris Shinn). Speculate away.
