the best black version

i was just hearing black, and then it came to me this question, what's the best version of black???, including live and studio
i'd say that the benaroya hall version i don't know the year, i think 2000.
its awsome, especially when the people sang the last part, it gives me creeps each time i hear it

    Unplugged by a country mile. I love the different melody of the second verse that eddie sang and I love the "we belong together" tag. simply my favourite version by a long way.

    Yeah I have to agree that unplugged is the best.. but the only other version I can see giving it's well deserved run fer it's money is the version from Madison Sqaure.. everytime I watch that DVD and get to Black I kick everyone out of the room, turn up the volume, and try to imagine having been there.. it gives me the chillies each and every time and that last note that ed just carries out... oh god gets me everytime

    Thanks for posting that little known piece of Layne''s poetry.. if I remember correctly wasn't that from a poem he wrote called Core?

    any version that doesn't have "we don't or didn't belong together" tag in it. if the singer can sing that song with that much passion than that tag is contradictory. (unless the singer is trying to convince otherwise)
    plus, it's depressing.

    are you referring to my signature? if so, its the very quiet spoken part in sickman. you can barely hear it but the lyrics are in the album sleeve. Core is amazing though.

    the "original" version, on ten. Live on 2 legs is great, too. So many great live versions...

    I've never heard one with "don't belong" or "didn't belong"..."we belong" i have, but could you name some versions with the other two tags in?

    Personally my favourites are Unplugged, and the 'remix' on Rearviewmirror.

    One of my recent favorites has to be this one off of the Europe Rarities cd that a website put together not sure the date was this tour but im sure someone else knows what black I am talking about

    I can't stand the one in Benaroya... it's great up until the audience sings the last part and then joyously cheers themselves after it. Ugh. The song is supposed to be depressing and lonely, not a happy crowd sing-along.

    I know I take it too seriously, but the song means a lot to me.

    I've witnessed Black live 4 times, and it just keeps getting better each time. I recommend you look at it from a psychological standpoint. This is a downer of a song lyrically, but it is done in such an inspirational way. And when it is done live, and the crowd sings along, the feeling is euphoric. It is an outlet for everyone (and the song means a lot to everyone there too) to collectively vent and sing out the songs they love. It is the same with Alive and a number of others. Hell, just about every show I've been to has turned into one great big singalong. I think that's why I keep going back. I leave feeling invigorated.

    Have a listen to the Boston, 5/25/06. It's my favorite, although I am biased having been there. Both nights just blew my mind...

    no one favorite...
    the unplugged version still blows me away.
    Benoroya Hall is a great one (I personally love cranking that one up in the car and singing with the audience on that one.)
    the album version is always a good one.
    and, having been there so am somewhat biased,

    Eh, I don't know. I have no problem with Alive sing alongs or Betterman sing alongs or what have you, but Black just feels to personal. It means a lot to my personal life. I know I'm not unique at all in that regard, but when everybody sings along it just kind of ruins the illusion. You know what I mean?

    don't you think the crowd is cheering because of the heart and emotion they pour into the song, the overwhelming and unexpected response in that benaroya hall, and the sheer power that comes across as they sing those words? i do. i don't look at it as a happy sing-along, but the crowd appreciating each other as they realize that everyone put their heart into those lyrics at that moment, just as eddie did when he first recorded them. i personally think it's one of the best Black's ever.

    Try Fox Theater (Atlanta) 4/3/94. Mike's guitar is absolutely writhing in pain @ around 4:30. And Ed conveys all the anger & frustration that's been lost since this song became one of Ed's wine breaks (see the next suggestion).

    Ed has his gravel in full force during the We Belong Together tag:
    "I don't...I don't think...these people understand...oh they don't understand...oh no one understands...we belong together...together..."

    And then does some growls to round it out.

    MSG - I was there, it was good, definitely one of my favorites. Completely different feel as Fox. I'd say this is my favorite of the "new" ones.

    Jones Beach II - 8/24/00 Mike has a really good outtro as well. What a time...

    My fav version is the one on live on two legs, mikes guitar solo is just amazing, he conveys the emotion of that song so perfectly.
