Very nice! I got some ginger growing for the first time this year too. It was lovely. The "fall crop" has not really turned up anything, I think it was too warm. Maybe something happens now that it is colder. It was a good but not stellar gardening season.

Always an experiment and each season has its quirks for sure.
Gave away a few bulbs of garlic to my coworkers to plant and I will plant about  15 cloves very soon for a July harvest.
Been adding chopped up leaves to my raised beds to build up the soil. Have a small amount of kale, Swiss chard and lettuce to harvest then will be finished til spring.

I'm on a turnip overload and not sure what I'll do with them.
  • Lou you have always been an inspiration to me. Now I'm pretty much house bound my gardening days are over . I love seeing your work to the end

Thanks Rob. Take care of yourself and won't take getting my hands dirty for granted.

I read somewhere that in days past people would carve turnips into jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. Maybe I'll do that.

A frost did hit my garden. First time I ate frosted dill right off the plant. Was very fresh and sweet. Like dill ice-cream.

had a warm few days and prepped one of my gardens. Found this carrot hiding out. It was so yummy.
Plan to plant shelling peas soon. Then carrots, beets, turnips, lettuce, spinach. Maybe radishes.
Been doing the same thing every year. Might want to try something else.

Half the fun for me is the preparation. Making the dirt good. Planning what to plant.

Took all of my compost. Mostly unfinished, and dug it into my bed. About 5' × 20. Figure to let it decompose in there.

One of my best seasons we learned the method called 'French intensive gardening'. Where you dig, pitchfork the bottom, add raw compostables, move the dirt on top, repeat.
I did a majorly abbreviated version of this. No pitchforking and minimized moving the dirt. Part of my garden, I left alone. Will see if it makes much of a difference.
Have a bunch of chopped up leaves that sat on top all winter that I mixed in too.
When it comes time to plant. I'll likely buy some soil and add it to the spots I plan to plant.

    Sure it will be good.

Any suggestions or anyone getting ready now?

I would love to grow stuff in our backyard but there are too many varmints roaming around.

I understand. My area does have its fair share. You can try putting in a pot on a deck. I use fencing.. chicken wire on bottom and a deer netting above. About 6' high. Also I'm part of a community garden. They fence it in. Still some stuff gets snacked on by animals. Not too bad.

All sorts of tricks to discourage them. None foolproof and can be frustrating!
