my wife saw two withdrawals from our joint account of $800 each from paypal. I looked into it, and it was legit from our paypal account. Called Paypal, someone hacked in, added themselves to my account, somehow managed to turn off the notification I'd get from adding a new person (even paypal was confused by this), and then made themselves the admin on my account. Luckily since it takes so long for the money to actually move from bank account to paypal, I was able to get paypal to remove that person and change my password and lock the account so no movement could be made. Once the funds are there, I call paypal and unlock the account and move the money back.lastexitlondon said:That sucks shit man. Why always the good people.

I got an email 2 weeks ago about a hard credit check. Someone got a hold of my SSN and opened a credit card in my name.
I immediately canceled the card (nothing was charged), froze my credit, told my bank, and filed a police report.
I threatened to subpoena the credit card company to give me the application info and the address on file lol, but they refused.
I've been systematically changing logins & passwords for literally everything I can think of online, and I changed my email address too.
I've always been hyper paranoid about all that shit. I shred all my mail if it has my name on it, and I literally try to rip out every card reader I encounter before I use it.
The bank and the credit agencies all said I should be ok now that my credit is frozen. I might see what else I can do, but it's out there now, so whatever.May your days be long, til kingdom come.0 -
after doing some research, Paypal isn't at all secure. I was lucky I was able to find the right way (through reddit, of course) to contact them and speak to an actual person. Trying to navigate their online case file opening system is a joke.lastexitlondon said:Holy shit. I always use PayPal I will have to look out for this type of shit

Nothing is 100% safe. But PayPal always takes care of you when this does happen. It happened to me years ago - several purchases made via paypal that came to maybe $700. Got sorted quickly, and it hasn't happened to me since (yet). I didn't consider it a reason to stop using paypal. I've also had my corporate credit card compromised. My work was wondering why I bought a bunch of kids' toys and shit, lol. Of course the bank takes care of it. It happens, but we're pretty well protected. What worries me a lot more is identity theft. I even included identity theft insurance in my home insurance plan, and got the credit bureaus to red-flag my accounts so that if anyone tries to apply for new credit I will be contacted by phone by the company being applied to and asked a bunch of security questions before they will grant the credit approval.Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. I read a lot of online testimonials of people NOT getting taken care of by paypal. They didn't really take care of me. It was more that we were able to stop it based on the lag time it takes to transfer funds from paypal to bank account and vice versa. Had I not caught that in time, I would have been out the $1600. Many of the things they said that would happen (notification wise), actually, didn't happen, during this process.PJ_Soul said:lastexitlondon said:Holy shit.
