What a great song. When I first bought Binaural that was (and still is) definitely a stand out track for me. A testament to the songwriting talents of Mr. Gossard. I love the lyrics. An interesting spin on the Columbine incident.
i remember one time my sister's dog was over at my place, and i put on rival.... and at the start of the song it was trying to find where the dog was... it was running up to the speakers, looking behind them... it was great!
yes, the lyrics are great, but the music isn't THAT good
I couldn't remember that I ever sang this song, or that I ever thought of the lyrics
ex equo(spelled this way?) with sleight of hand it's my least favourite binaural track

When he was six, he believed that the moon overhead followed him
By nine, he deciphered the illusion, trading magic for fact, no trade-backs
So this is what it's like to be an adult?
If he only knew now what he knew then

Somtimes i know, sometimes i rise,sometimes i fall,sometimes i dont,sometimes i cringe,somtimes i live sometimes i walk,sometimes i kneel,somtimes i speek of nothing at all,sometimes i reach to myself dear god
Originally posted by grooveamatic the lyrics are like real poetry...not sappy goo poetry like most people think of poetry, but language boiled down...succinct...
Binaural in general is a masterpiece...it can't be said enough how under-rated this album is. I hated it the first 10 times I listened, and then it grew on me and I can't take it out of my player
Rival is incredible. Of all the songs on Binural this track has to be the one that benefits most from the production. The guitars sound almost toylike. Awesome live but I'd stick with the studio version. It's all about the keys. They make that song. They sound so fucking mad, but in a playful way. Perfect.
It is a decent song on that album, but not a stand out track like Light Years, Sleight Of hand, or Nothing As It Seems. I personally find Soon Forget on Binaural to have the most true and meaningful lyrics on the entire album.
".....this land is mine, this land is free
i'll do what i want, but irresponsibly
it's evolution baby...."
the 'every grain' part is awesome, as is the song structure itself.
Hey man, that part is up with my favorite pearl jam music. Yeah, I like how its shaped too, the song, if you look at it (as you obviously have!). Sometimes when i hear an indecipherable part like that I'm afraid to hear the real lyrics because I like the words i think i hear so much. but this one blew my shitty interpretation out of the water.
take care
I thought it was 'every inch thats left to crawl, on the slide of every one'.
another one i still want to hear live. They don't play it enough. I also wish they'd pick up the tempo a bit live, give it more crunch and speed. Love it when the combine it w/ Jeremy; a nice little one-two. Rival and Of the Girl are standouts on Binaural, and 2 of Mr. Gossard's best songs.
oh yeah, i forgot my rival story. The first time I put on Binaural, I was taking a walk around midnight or so down along the road where I used to live. The area is pretty rural, so no lights (except the moon and stars) or anything except woods and pastures. Well, when Rival came on, and I heard Dakota barking, it freaked me out b/c it was pitchblack that night and I thought some rabid dog was gonna attack me any second. After I nearly had a heart attack, I realized it was on the album and had a good laugh.

I love rival... from "of the girl" on through parting ways is amazing, its the best part of binaural, maybe even the best run of songs ever. I just wish soon forget wasn't there:
Of the girl
grievance
rival
sleight of hand
parting ways

Swap Grievance for NAIS and you have my four favourites.
Of The Girl is one of my ALL TIME favoutire Pearl Jam songs.
Yes! Totally agree.
To me Riot Act lacked Stone input greatly.
