another one i still want to hear live. They don't play it enough. I also wish they'd pick up the tempo a bit live, give it more crunch and speed. Love it when the combine it w/ Jeremy; a nice little one-two. Rival and Of the Girl are standouts on Binaural, and 2 of Mr. Gossard's best songs.

oh yeah, i forgot my rival story. The first time I put on Binaural, I was taking a walk around midnight or so down along the road where I used to live. The area is pretty rural, so no lights (except the moon and stars) or anything except woods and pastures. Well, when Rival came on, and I heard Dakota barking, it freaked me out b/c it was pitchblack that night and I thought some rabid dog was gonna attack me any second. After I nearly had a heart attack, I realized it was on the album and had a good laugh.

    Yes! Totally agree.

To me Riot Act lacked Stone input greatly.

  • I love rival... from "of the girl" on through parting ways is amazing, its the best part of binaural, maybe even the best run of songs ever. I just wish soon forget wasn't there:

    Of the girl
    grievance
    rival
    sleight of hand
    parting ways

    ... that would be sweetness.

Yes, I agree. I love that song. Ed sounds so tough- "Better pony up and bring both your barrels full." Whew.

  • the lyrics are like real poetry...not sappy goo poetry like most people think of poetry, but language boiled down...succinct...

I think of them as Muscular.

I don't know...the lyrics to Go seem muscular to me....Rival is an excercise in exactitude, a statement of loose purpose....it's a free verse poem.

  • killer song. The chorus, w the keys and badass lyrics is unforgettable.
  • I forgot about the first time I heard this song....

last last summer, me and my friend biked down (downhill) to the lake almost every day,and we stopped by a pawn shop on the way there, and I picked up Binaural. So I listened to it the rest of the way there, and the way back.

Wewent the same way all teh time, and there was one house that had this dog that always went nuts as we passed it. Since it was downhill, we could rush past it on the way, but on teh way back it was all uphill. So we were going past on the way back, and Rival started playing on my headphones. I yelled out "oh fuck!" and started looking either way, expecting a big rabid dog to come after me, then the drums kicked in and it was all good...

got all the adrenaline and shit going, though, cause it was blasting.
