To celebrate ten years of Wider Circles, we’ve recorded an acoustic version of Lean In, stripped back and full-hearted. A reminder of what remains when a song gets quiet.

“Novels of Acquaintance” is a story about the beauty and bounty found deep in the quiet of an Appalachian summer. It is a love song of sorts…about the long arc of learning someone; something, someplace.

It is about the love of story, the love of folklore, the love of letter writing, and the slower times when a courtship is a dance with patience and everything isn’t so immediate.

Candle light and poetry are tools of the trade. Useful crafts.

Also, within this song is the story of a man we met, who on his deathbed after a long battle with cancer, asked that his final wish be to come hear the music live. We met him and sang to him backstage in Floyd, Virginia, and then he turned and was wheeled away.

The last verse :

“I see you,

picture perfect

Rise together, lose no faith

That I have you

and you have me”

It is a nod to where we will all go on our final days, when this earthly journey is over.

The title phrase “Novels of Acquaintance“ is about our relationship to time. We are writing novels together, this is a long dance, and patience is our strongest tool.

Yall, we don’t do a lot of shows these days. Spring is blooming, and it’s imposible not to take note of the flowers. We are digging into our creative well to find the voices and songs that want to be sung. We’re leaning into a slower rhythm this year to make space for the muse. We’re deep in the work of writing a whole new body of songs and making sense of this new world around us. In order to honor that process, we’re playing much fewer shows than usual… but each one will be a full expression in song.

We will also be playing a Hurricane Helene 1 year anniversary weekend for all our beloved in Western North Carolina this September, stay tuned!

We’re heading out for a run of Southern shows this fall in beloved Appalachia. Our tour is lighter this year as we tend to new material, and committed to time at home in the gardens and with our families. Each show will be a full expression in song.
