From Letter From An American. Amazing that some posters on here are all in because of “the other” and/or Israel. Amazing to watch in real time. Good fucking luck.

I wonder how many dead we’ll be singing about in a few weeks.

Then the governor launched into a wholesale condemnation of the Trump regime. He warned that “[i]f some of us can be snatched off the streets without a warrant, based only on suspicion or skin color, then none of us are safe. Authoritarian regimes begin by targeting people who are least able to defend themselves. But they do not stop there.”

Newsom called Trump out for firing the government watchdogs that could hold him accountable for fraud, and for declaring war “on culture, on history, on science, on knowledge itself. Databases quite literally are vanishing. He’s delegitimizing news organizations and he’s assaulting the First Amendment…. [H]e’s dictating what universities themselves can teach. He’s targeting law firms and the judicial branch that are the foundations of an orderly and civil society. He’s calling for a sitting governor to be arrested for no other reason than…, in his own words, ‘for getting elected.’”

“[T]his isn’t just about protests here in Los Angeles,” Newsom said. “When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation. This is about all of us. This is about you. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next.”

“Democracy is under assault right before our eyes,” Newsom said. “This moment we have feared has arrived. He’s taking a wrecking ball…to our founding fathers’ historic project: three coequal branches of independent government.”

Newsom urged Americans to stand up for the country. “I know many of you are feeling deep anxiety, stress, and fear,” he said. “But I want you to know that you are the antidote to that fear and that anxiety. What Donald Trump wants most is your fealty, your silence, to be complicit in this moment,” Newsom said.

Do not give in to him.”

It's going to be even easier for Trump to end the American Republic now. Nothing like bombing Iran to distract everyone from setting up an authoritarian state. Yeehaw.

Apparently this is what America wants.  The majority voted for him.  And they voted for lawmakers who support or at least bend to him.  And though they are a small majority, they are a majority.  Half the fucking country is insane.
And it's all so incredibly depressing.  Every American should be concerned, depressed, disturbed, and/or mad as fuck, but I guess not enough of us are.  That's the hardest part.  Living in the huge insane asylum with all these people thinking this is winning.
But of course, I'll be accused of exaggerating or being overly dramatic. I guess reality is just too much for some people to handle.

I'm sorry for your very understandable anxiety.   I know it's a very difficult time right now, and many of us are feeling the way you do.  Hopefully we can do enough to build a strong resistance and stop this insanity- and I believe resistance is building. And some of that hinges on getting enough people who voted for T to realize he will only make their lives worse, not better, and hope they too will speak out.

One thing that really gets me is how unreal that there are people you can run into at election time who say, "I don't vote because it doesn't make a difference."  The difference this time was between democracy and authoritarianism.  What a catastrophe that led to, and now we all have to live with the consequences.

Supreme Court limits ability of judges to stop Trump

In a scathing solo dissent penned by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the appointee of former President Joe Biden accused her conservative colleagues of creating “an existential threat to the rule of law” by allowing Trump to “violate the Constitution.”

She warned that the “executive lawlessness will flourish” if lower-court judges are now required to let a president “act unlawfully.”

“Eventually, executive power will become completely uncontainable, and our beloved constitutional Republic will be no more,” Jackson wrote.

She continued: “Perhaps the degradation of our rule-of-law regime would happen anyway. But this Court’s complicity in the creation of a culture of disdain for lower courts, their rulings, and the law (as they interpret it) will surely hasten the downfall of our governing institutions, enabling our collective demise.”

Too late. Much too late. It’s already happening here. What’s a little detention or death, eh?

‘We are not safe in America today:’ These American citizens say they were detained by ICE

Elzon Lemus is always on the road for work, traveling from one place to another.

But ever since federal immigration officers pulled the electrician over as he was driving to his first job of the day earlier this month in Nassau County, New York, Lemus has been on high alert, limiting his travel around town out of fear, he said — despite being a US citizen.

On June 3, Lemus says he was briefly detained during a traffic stop by federal agents because he resembled someone the agents were looking for, they told him and video from the encounter shows.

Lemus’ arrest, and other reports of American citizens being detained by immigration officials, highlights growing concerns over racial profiling and constitutional rights — for both the documented and undocumented — as the Trump administration’s broad mass deportation crackdown takes aim at people of all ages from children and families to suspected criminals by detaining people outside courtroom hearings, during traffic stops and in workplacesweeps.

Canadian officials press US government for details on Canadian citizen who died in ICE custody at a Florida detention center

Canadian consular officials are pressing for more information from the United States government after a Canadian citizen died while in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a Florida detention center this week.

Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old lawful permanent resident of the US, was being detained at the Federal Detention Center in Miami while facing deportation over a 2023 conviction for racketeering and drug trafficking, according to ICE.

Wait a fucking minute... what country arrests and zip ties old people in wheel chairs because they were peacefully protesting.  Gotta be Russia, right?  Where the hell is this?

That's so hard to wrap my head around.  The whole goddamn country should be ashamed of this kind of behavior.  Only people without a soul, a heart, or the slightest sense of decency would be OK with this.  We've been taken over by monsters.

I’m sure people are sleeping well at night knowing a bunch of seniors won’t be rolling, walkering and shuffling around the halls of Congress and raising their old, tired voices to demand that there be no cuts to their Medicaid benefits. Wouldn’t want a cop dying now would we? Can’t have it.

I’m mortifyingly embarrassed to be an American and I’m thinking twice about travelling anywhere. And if you’re an American travelling anywhere else in the world and find yourself in a pickle or being harassed in any way, shape or form, don’t act surprised nor bitch about it. Karma and reciprocation are things.

I’m not going to avoid such things if I can help it… I’m thinking about loading up on things like Toronto Blue Jays hats and T-shirts and pretending to be from Canada.

For a couple of reasons not worth mentioning here, I have struggled with anxiety for the last 33 years.  But this year has added another layer to that anxiety mixed with a heavy dose of angst, anger, and disappointment, all a result of watching democracy being torn down by an authoritarian dictator and the ultra wealthy who participate in those ends.
I am at the point where I wake up every morning with a feeling of dread.  This is not healthy, and yet I think it is a natural response to the crisis we are in, and it seems like a natural and understandable response.  What I haven't figured out is how to find at least a semblance of balance.  I miss being happy.  I can only vaguely remember waking up and looking forward to the day with a feeling of dread.  I suppose I could just shut everything down on my computer and phone that lets the toxic news of the world bleed into my life.  I suppose there are people who can do that.  But that's not me.  I can forget about all this crap for a little while by watching a movie or listening to music, etc.  But the concerns always seep back in so much of the time.
So what about you folks?  Do you manage to keep a balance?  Do you have joy filled days in which you are able to set aside concerns about what is happening to our country?  What are your best coping methods?  Maybe I can learn something here, thanks.

    Yea, it was the meme.

Will I get deported for sharing this meme of JD Vance?

The face that launched a thousand memes could put you on the first boat home

I have a very important public service announcement to make. Do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, make fun of Vice-President JD Vance by sharing one of the millions of unflattering memesdedicated to him. Don’t you dare chuckle at the images of him looking like the “lollipop kid” in Shrek (the resemblance is uncanny) or a chicken nugget. And, whatever you do, do not share the meme that you can find here, where he looks like a big bald baby. You risk hurting the poor man’s feelings and, also, you might get kicked out of the country.

So says a 21-year-old Norwegian called Mads Mikkelsen, anyway. Mikkelsen recently accused American border officials of denying him entry into the US because he had a meme of a bloated baby Vance saved on his phone. Mikkelsen, who had travelled to the US to visit friends, told the Norwegian paper Nordlys that immigration officers at Newark airport interrogated him, forced him to give fingerprints and blood samples, and went through his phone. After they found the Vance meme, as well as a picture of Mikkelsen holding a homemade wooden pipe, they sent him home.

“Both pictures had been automatically saved to my camera roll from a chat app, but I really didn’t think that these innocent pictures would put a stop to my entry into the country,” Mikkelsen told Nordlys.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has rejected Mikkelsen’s claim that he was kicked out of the country for disrespecting the vice-president. “FACT CHECK. Claims that Mads Mikkelsen was denied entry because of a meme are unequivocally FALSE,” they posted on Facebook earlier in the week. “TRUTH: Mikkelsen was refused entry into the US for his admitted drug use.”

A homeland security assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, also called the story “BS” in a post on X.

Mikkelsen, meanwhile, insisted to the fact-checking website Snopesthat the meme played a role in getting him denied entry. The 21-year-old claimed border officials told him he was getting sent home because of “extremist propaganda [the meme] and narcotic paraphernalia”. However, that claim hasn’t been verified.

We may never know if the Vance meme really did play a role in getting Mikkelsen kicked out of the country. While I don’t normally side with border officials, one imagines the pipe picture was probably the actual culprit. Still, the story, which made headlines around the world, won’t help America’s tourism industry. International visitors are staying out of the US after a spate of stories about tourists getting sent to Ice detention centers without any explanation. The World Travel & Tourism Council has said the country could lose $12.5bn in international visitor spending this year.

The story has also reignited interest in JD Vance memes, which have been circulating for months now, peaking at end of February after the vice-president scolded Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an exchange that launched a million memes. Indeed, the Irish lawmaker Ivana Bacik recently held up the Vance baby meme while speaking in the Irish parliament about the Mikkelsen story.

While claims that making fun of Mr Hillbilly Elegy may get you deported might be exaggerated, the fact that so many people immediately believed Mikkelsen’s claims is a sign of just how badly the US’s international image has been damaged and how dystopian the country has become. The US is heading very quickly towards authoritarianism. It is cracking down on dissent and protest. Book banning has surged and the Trump administration has instructed the Department of Education to end their investigations into these bans, calling them a “hoax”. Free speech rights are being shredded.

And the people responsible for all this? They’re not evil geniuses, they’re embarrassing dweebs with massively meme-able faces. “I knew that one day we might have to watch as capitalism and greed and bigotry led to a world where powerful men, deserving or not, would burn it all down,” Rebecca Shaw said in a Guardian piece earlier this year. “What I didn’t expect, and don’t think I could have foreseen, is how incredibly cringe it would all be.”

I know we're all aware that the line has now been crossed, but I just want to make highlights so everyone can continue to start accepting the reality of it all. I think many Americans are still living in denial.

Trump doesn’t have to grab power; Republicans are giving it to him

Purportedly from Robert Reich via Liz Cheney but the author is someone else, apparently. I’m not sure the source but it sounds good. Unfortunately, I think it’s still too late because this authoritarian regime is just going to continue until they again turn on their own whole sale for their lack of purity and fealty to Herr COOTWH and his heirs. Take it for what it’s worth.

    Friends,

I’m told that the following message, which I received earlier today, purporting to be from Liz Cheney, is a hoax. She didn’t send it. It’s an excellent and important message nonetheless. (Several of you say it originated with Dr. Pru Lee.)

    ***

    From Liz Cheney

    Dear Democratic Party,

    I need more from you.

You keep sending emails begging for $15,

while we’re watching fascism consolidate power in real time.

This administration is not simply “a different ideology.”

It is a coordinated, authoritarian machine — with the Supreme Court, the House, the Senate, and the executive pen all under its control.

    And you?

You’re still asking for decorum and donations. WTF.

    That won’t save us.

I don’t want to hear another polite floor speech.

    I want strategy.

    I want fire.

I want action so bold it shifts the damn news cycle — not fits inside one.

Every time I see something from the DNC, it’s asking me for funds.

    Surprise.

Those of us who donate don’t want to keep sending money just to watch you stand frozen as the Constitution goes up in flames — shaking your heads and saying,

“Well, there’s not much we can do. He has the majority.”

    I call bullshit.

If you don’t know how to think outside the box…

If you don’t know how to strategize…

If you don’t know how to fight fire with fire…

what the hell are we giving you money for?

Some of us have two or three advanced degrees.

Some of us have military training.

Some of us know what coordinated resistance looks like — and this ain’t it.

Yes, the tours around the country? Nice.

    The speeches? Nice.

    The clever congressional clapbacks? Nice.

That was great for giving hope.

    Now we need action.

You have to stop acting like this is a normal presidency that will just time out in four years.

We’re not even at Day 90, and look at the chaos.

    Look at the disappearances.

Look at the erosion of the judiciary, the press, and our rights.

If you do not stop this, we will not make it 1,460 days.

So here’s what I need from you — right now:

    1. Form an independent, civilian-powered investigative coalition.

I’m talking experts. Veterans. Whistleblowers. Journalists. Watchdog orgs.

Deputize the resistance. Build a real-time archive of corruption, overreach, and executive abuse.

Make it public. Make it unshakable.

Let the people drag the rot into the light.

If you can’t hold formal hearings, hold public ones.

If Congress won’t act, let the country act.

This isn’t about optics — it’s about receipts.

Because at some point, these people will be held accountable.

And when that day comes, we’ll need every name, every signature, every illegal order, every act of silence — documented.

You’re not just preserving truth — you’re preparing evidence for prosecution.

The more they vanish people and weaponize data, the more we need truth in the sunlight.

    2. Join the International Criminal Court.

Yes, I said it. Call their bluff.

You cannot control what the other side does.

But you can control your own integrity.

So prove it. Prove that your party is still grounded in law, human rights, and ethical leadership.

    Join.

If you’ve got nothing to hide — join.

Show the world who’s hiding bodies, bribes, and buried bank accounts.

Force the GOP to explain why they’d rather protect a war criminal than sign a treaty.

And while you’re at it, publicly invite ICC observers into U.S. borders.

Make this administration explain — on camera — why they’re terrified of international oversight.

    3. Fund state-level resistance infrastructure.

Don’t just send postcards. Send resources.

Channel DNC funds into rapid-response teams, legal defense coalitions, sanctuary networks, and digital security training.

If the federal government is hijacked, build power underneath it.

If the laws become tools of oppression, help people resist them legally, locally, and boldly.

This is not campaign season — this is an authoritarian purge.

    Stop campaigning.

Act like this is the end of democracy, because it is.

We WILL REMEMBER the warriors come primaries.

Fighting this regime should be your marketing strategy.

    And let’s be clear:

The reason the other side always seems three steps ahead is because they ARE.

    They prepared for this.

They infiltrated school boards, courts, local legislatures, and police unions.

They built a machine while you wrote press releases.

We’re reacting — they’ve been executing a plan for years.

It’s time to shift from panic to blueprint.

You should already be working with strategists and military minds on PROJECT 2029,

a coordinated, long-term plan to rebuild this country when the smoke clears.

You should be publicly laying out:

    • The laws and amendments you’ll pass to ensure this never happens again

    • The systems you’ll tear down and the safeguards you’ll enshrine

    • The plan to hold perpetrators of human atrocities accountable

    • The urgent commitment to immediately bring home those sold into slavery in El Salvador

You say you’re the party of the people?

Then show the people the plan.

    4. Use your platform to educate the public on rights and resistance tactics.

If they’re going to strip us of rights and lie about it — arm the people with truth.

Text campaigns. Mass trainings. Downloadable “Know Your Rights” kits. Multilingual legal guides. Encrypted phone trees.

    Give people tools, not soundbites.

    We don’t need more slogans.

    We need survival manuals.

    5. Leverage international media and watchdogs.

Stop hoping U.S. cable news will wake up.

They’re too busy playing both sides of fascism.

Feed the real stories to BBC, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, Reuters, Der Spiegel — hell, leak them to anonymous dropboxes if you have to.

Make what’s happening in America a global scandal.

And stop relying on platforms that are actively suppressing truth.

    Start leveraging Substack. Use Bluesky.

That’s where the resistance is migrating. That’s where censorship hasn’t caught up.

If the mainstream won’t carry the truth — outflank them.

Get creative. Go underground. Go global.

If our democracy is being dismantled in broad daylight, make sure the whole world sees it — and make sure we’re still able to say it.

    6. Create a digital safe haven for whistleblowers and defectors.

Not everyone inside this regime is loyal.

Some are scared. Some want out.

    Build the channels.

    Encrypted. Anonymous. Protected.

Make it easy for the cracks in the system to become gaping holes.

    And while you’re at it?

    Stop ostracizing MAGA defectors.

Everyone makes mistakes — even glaring, critical ones.

    We are not the bullies.

We are not the ones filled with hate.

And it is not your job to shame people who finally saw the fire and chose to step out of it.

They will have to deal with that internal struggle — the guilt of putting a very dangerous and callous regime in power.

But they’re already outnumbered. Don’t push them back into the crowd.

    We don’t need purity.

    We need numbers.

We need people willing to burn their red hats and testify against the machine they helped build.

    7. Study the collapse — and the comeback.

You should be learning from South Korea and how they managed their brief rule under dictatorship.

They didn’t waste time chasing the one man with absolute immunity.

    They went after the structure.

The aides. The enforcers. The loyalists. The architects.

They knocked out the foundation one pillar at a time —

until the “strongman” had no one left to stand on.

And his power crumbled beneath him.

You should be independently investigating every author of Project 2025,

every aide who defies court orders,

    every communications director repeating lies,

    every policy writer enabling cruelty,

every water boy who keeps this engine running.

You can’t stop a regime by asking the king to sit down.

You dismantle the throne he’s standing on — one coward at a time.

Stop being scared to fight dirty when the other side is fighting to erase the damn Constitution.

They are threatening to disappear AMERICANS.

    A M E R I C A N S.

And your biggest move can’t be another strongly worded email.

We don’t want your urgently fundraising subject lines.

    We want backbone.

    We want action.

We want to know you’ll stand up before we’re all ordered to sit down — permanently.

    We are watching.

And I don’t just mean your base.

I mean millions of us who see exactly what’s happening.

I’ve only got 6,000 followers — but the groups I’m in? The networks I touch? Over a quarter million.

Often when I speak, it echoes.

    But when we ALL

speak, it ROARS with pressure that will cause change.

    We need to be deafening.

You still have a chance to do something historic.

To be remembered for courage, not caution.

To go down as the party that didn’t just watch the fall — but fought the hell back with everything they had.

    But the clock is ticking.

And the deportation buses are idling.
