I've never surfed. If PJ had the balls to play Hawaii in the winter, I'd try surfing....but not on 25' waves.
Waikiki on a small day looks like a dream for beginners. I wish I had waves like that to learn on instead of the choppy , dumping waves of the east coast!
Tried a lesson when I was out there and couldn’t get the hang of it in one lesson. Definitely want to try again as obviously it requires a little more time to figure out. Maybe a week long set of lessons if I can ever have a reason to be out there again…PJ…
Took me two summers to stand up. There’s so much more to it than standing. Reading the water, paddling out, paddling for a wave, wave selection, knowing how to fall….. it’s not something that can be rushed. Which goes for a lot of things! But it was the most rewarding feeling for me personally.
Everyone needs to visit Hawaii. Still one of my all time favorite places that I ve been.
Did you fly direct? I don’t necessarily mind flying but I’m also not someone who sleeps during takeoff. I’m also prone to motion sickness. I always take a Dramamine before flights.
Yes nonstop Newark to Honolulu. If memory serves me correct it was an eleven hour flight.
I went in January and it was breaking 25-30' on the North Shore.
Is that the longest flight you ever took?
yea…. I’d be on the beach watching lol. Anything over 10’ is too much for me. Plus the crowds there when it’s pumping are more dangerous than the waves.
Either Hawaii or Austria, I think they were about the same.
The east side of the island had "little" 5-8' foot waves the entire time I was there. I stayed on Waikiki Beach and they were maybe knee high. You had to paddle reallllllly far out from what I remember. (went in 2011)
There were thousands of people watching the surfers on the North Shore and there was a real buzz on the island because all the big time surfers had flown for a possible Eddie competition. Turns out the waves were too inconsistent so it never happened. :(
@darwinstheory You and your wife need to go. It could be the prettiest place I've ever been too. I did an insane hike thru the jungle to a local known waterfall. People were jumping off a 20' waterfall into a very small pool below. They were really nice to me and asked if I wanted to try, I politely declined. lol
Those really far out 3-5’ waves that break forever are my dream.

I lived in Hawaii for a time and learned to surf in Waikiki. Canoes has a fun left for us goofy-footers, and Queens is a great right. Still my favorite spot (save for the crowds).

All that work and you didn't do it? I don't know that I would either. Hahaha! We've been talking about when we're going to be able to make it happen. Ireland may be next year. And Alaska/Hawaii in 27/28.

I definitely felt that there were way too many little things to get right to process it all at once. My takeaway was not frustration but just the knowledge that I will have to invest quite a bit more time in it to learn it. My life doesn’t have that luxury right now but maybe one day I will have the time.
