Blatant blown calls in IMPORTANT games

there’s a guy here….I won’t name names…who is always harping about “the refs screwed us.” he’s usually seeing this through biased glasses. But there HAVE been some super blatant blown calls that have cost teams in the playoffs…

game 7, 2019 NHL playoffs, VGK vs, SJS. Vegas is up 3-0 in the third, a 2 minute minor penalty is wrongly called a 5 minute major and the sharks score 4 goals in that power play and take the series. the NHL “apologizes” to VGK the following day.

2019 NFC Championship, rams vs. saints. blatant PI on the rams isn’t called with the saints deep in rams territory, tie game, 1:45 to go. Rams end up winning.

this year, NBA playoffs, pistons dude gets mugged by a knick while shooting a three as time expires. no call. knicks win by 1.

2002 WCF, game 6, kings vs. lakers…should have been a close out game for the kings but the refs wanted to ensure a game 7 (which the lakers won). Kings still haven’t recovered.

WHAT ELSE?
If I had known then what I know now...

Did anyone else Catch Tim Donaghy officiating the Knicks/Pacers last night? Good to see him back on his feet.

Hmmm. I see your point but sometimes the offsides has nothing to do with the goal and it’s weird when they take the goal off the board.  It still makes more sense, though, than calling back an 80 yd. TD because of a hold that occurred on the other side of the field.

Not that the Sox had a chance in the 1999 ALCS, but this one will always come to mind... My brother and I could see from 30 rows behind home plate that this wasn't close.

    1. The fan interference home run in the Yankees/Orioles playoff game sometime in the late 90s comes to mind.

    2. I am not a Patriots fan (I cheer against them) but on the helmet catch play that ruined their perfect season there were a number of blatant holds by the Giants O-line that weren’t called.  It’s cool for the story line that the miracle throw and catch happened and I was happy about that but it was pretty blatant.  (On the other hand, Tuck Rule.  IYKYK.)

    3. On the immaculate reception Franco Harris play there was at least one illegal block in the back by a Steeler blocker after the catch.  By the rules the TD should not have counted.

    4. In the 1986 Canada Cup when Mario Lemieux famously scored the winning goal against the then Soviets on a great odd man rush it was only an odd man rush because a Canadian player interfered with a Soviet defender trying to get back.  It should have been a penalty, no goal, and a power play for the Russians.

All this I just thought of in a few minutes.  There are tons of them.

I forget the year, I think 1993. Wayne Gretzky head butted I believe Doug Gilmour in game 7 of conference finals. Should have been a penalty and it wasn’t. LA tied up the game and then won it in OT. If Toronto wins that series they play Montreal in the Stanley cup final. Leafs haven’t been that close since

Good example.  The blown call was in Game 6.  That’s the game LA stole.  Then they won Game 7 as well.  Still hurts.

How about a non call?  Laetner stepped on a players chest and wasn't ejected.

Colorado's 5th down. It wasn't a particularly important game at the time, but without that win they don't win a share of the 1990 national championship.

the fucking tuck rule. Raiders got hosed. Official still swears it was the correct call. Looked like a fumble to me.

Absolutely on the tuck rule.  either a horrible rule or a horrible call. Raiders were royally screwed.

All of the players refuse to accept the silver. I think the IOC offers them the option to accept every year, or maybe every other year, but it has to be a team decision. At one time, one of them said his wife wanted him to accept it for their kid and he was ok with that. They since divorced and he doesn't want it anymore

I can somewhat understand an official missing a call in the course of a game for various reasons. I don't know what you'd call this though. Blown call doesn't do it justice. Maybe the most egregious abuse of power during a game?

They did it not once but twice.  The Russian team on their third attempt were successful in scoring and a whistle wasn't blown.

So, yes.  Most Egregious would still not be the word to describe this.
