Listing to Pearl Jam singles. Any favorites?
After recently listening to Vitalogy for the first time in quite a while, and then very recently having watched the Rick Beato interview with Mike and Jeff, I found my interest on Pearl Jam music reignited all over again. (It's not that I ever stopped liking them, but I tend to immerse my listening in particular types of music and the go on to something else for a while.)
So next thing I knew, I was digging into my P.J. singles which was really cool because doing that really puts the focus on individual songs, and the band has made several great singles.
My current favorites:
"Falling Down (Live)": The B side of the 10" "No Jeremy", Club Edition. Great song, excellent pressing!
"Alive": 2017 limited edition single, from the sound check for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony recorded on April 7th, 2017. Amazing. Sound check no less!
"Given to Fly": A side of the 1997 single. Such a great song and sounds awesome coming out of those fat 7" grooves.
"Merkinball": 7", both sides. Need I say more? A long-time favorite.
What are your favorite Pearl Jam singles?

Merkinball obviously. But mine skips on one side
I also dug the Man of the Hour single, buying it off Amazon back when. I think it is one of the few times a single works without a different B-side (with it being a soundtrack song)... But maybe it could have had a borrowed Danny Elfman-track on there.
Save You with Otherside as the B-side. One of those WHY ISN'T THIS SONG ON THE ALBUM-moments.

Sure would be nice. Mine copy sounds good, but it could be better, for sure.Save You is such a great song! I have to keep an eye out for that one as a single."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -
Dissident. Having six live B-sides was mind blowing at the time. I couldn’t believe I actually had a live version of Even Flow on CD. Now, I have like 500 versions of Even Flow on my hard drive lol2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. I wouldn't take away Lost Dogs, but the internet and LD took away some of the appeal. I liked having the hunt back in the day. Trying to find a reasonable copy of Dead Man, searching through used CDs at the music store to see what else you could find.
I probably listened to U, Dead Man, Down, and many others more as singles before they were released on LD or easy to find on the internet. The hunt and mystery was part of the fun.
But to answer the question, the single I probably enjoyed listening to the most was Black, Red Yellow, even though that was easy to get.0 -

I didn't know there were singles taken off Lost Dogs. Are the vinyl or CD singles?"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -

You really can’t go wrong with the all-time classic Alive / Once / Wash 12” either.“Do not postpone happiness”

Does it have to be a record? Then again, the only place I have Go is on streaming, but the acoustic version of Elderly Woman (with the slight change in lyrics) is a good one.
Me you wouldn't recall...becomes....of course you can't see me...

Alone - b-side of Go - is so much better than the Lost Dogs version.Spectrum 10/27/09; New Orleans JazzFest 5/1/10; Made in America 9/2/12; Phila, PA 10/21/13; Phila, PA 10/22/13; Baltimore Arena 10/27/13; Phila, PA 4/28/16; Phila, PA 4/29/16; Fenway Park 8/7/16; Fenway Park 9/2/18; Asbury Park 9/18/21; Camden 9/14/22; Las Vegas 5/16/24; Las Vegas 5/18/24; Phila, PA 9/7/24; Phila, PA 9/9/24; Baltimore Arena 9/12/24; Pittsburgh 5/16/25; Pittsburgh 5/18/25

I must confess, I always think of a single as a record, but anything that is considered a single in any form is fair game.

Some of the singles mentioned here (one of mine included) have three songs. I wonder, is it not true that a release more than just one A-side and/ or more than one B-side is considered an EP (extra-play)?"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0

I think that terminology must have been updated with the introduction of CD singles, that had 70 minutes on them.
I have two 3 inch (?) CD-singles. Cute. But even those fit more than two songs I presume

I've seen CDs that only contain two songs. Seems rather odd to put 6 or 7 minutes on a format that can hold over 70 minutes!

Seems rather odd to put 6 or 7 minutes on a format that can hold over 70 minutes! It doesn’t actually have anything to do with the number of songs, or the length of the record. Typically, an EP is not named after one of the featured songs, whereas a single has a lead title (the A-side). This would mean Merkinball is an EP, even though it only has 2 songs, whereas Dissident is a single, even though it has a lot more.
It got a lot more confusing with the advent of the CD single format, blurring the lines between single / EP / Maxi single / Mini LP etcPost edited by goldrush on“Do not postpone happiness”
