Today had to have been a top 10 day of idiocy for him. The morning shows and not defending the constitution and making money by not paying China by hurting our own economy, Alcatraz, the film tariffs. Tremendous run.
Yeah it’s like a good three night stand by your favorite band!

You thought Trump couldn’t  be stupider, but there’s always more. He is going to reopen Alcatraz. First, it’s a great tourist attraction so goodbye to that. Second if you’ve been there, you’ll know it’s in no shape to be an active prison. It will take millions to bring it up to code and years. And for what? Do we have some epidemic of prison escapes?

Just another whim that everyone's too scared to even challenge him on.

I have been there, and I thought it would be more likely to be condemned and closed to tours than ever being re-oponed but we need to tell the emperor that he's clothed.

Yes, to make it acceptable as a national park.  There is a $50MM renovation going on.  It doesn't make habitable.  There is no water source and I'm not even sure it's hooked up to a power grid.  It would probably cost 250MM+ just to house 350 prisoners.  And years of work.  Not to mention the lost revenue.  Today it hosts 1.6MM visitors a year and generates 60MM.

I really like the place.  The night tour is fantastic.

After Shawshank(old Ohio State Pen in Mansfield) somebody in Ohio thought it wise to capitalize on the interest.
They've preserved portions of the prison. Tourist and venue revenue.

I think Pete Hegseth is going to have another tough day tomorrow. Turns out he used Signal often and it was his aide that posted the Houthi messages. Yet he never mentioned that.

My take on putting a bunch of money into Alcatraz because it's "cool" had nothing to do with conditions and everything to do with practicality. It's impractical but Trump sees it as a power move or something. And no matter how impractical it is, nobody will tell him because we're served entirely by Trump sycophants.

As an aside though, I think we celebrate terrible conditions in prisons far too much. Countries with more humane treatment of inmates have far less recidivism. The punishment is the loss of freedom but we think they're living the high-life if they get to watch the Super Bowl or eat food without bugs in it.

Never mind jailing non-violent offenders with violent and mixing in the mentally ill, plus imprisoning folks for their homelessness, mental illness and/or addictions. Add on the inescapable of never really getting out from under having been convicted via losing voting rights, finding gainful employment or not getting “free” from having served your time/sentence and repaid your “debt” to society. It’s called the industrial prison complex for a reason.

It is all a power move, all this deportation stuff he is doing. Alcatraz is just another attention grabbing word designed to get the attention of the gang bangers here illegally, and any of their pals thinking of climbing over.

Come to America illegally and you could end up in an El Salvadoran gulag for the rest of your life…or Rwanda…or Libya. Go ahead, make his day.

Much more effective than building a wall. And cheaper.
