Original Pressing vs. Reissue

Is there really a difference between Original Pressings and Reissue records?

I only have the reissues and was wondering if the price for OP is worth it.

Ten vs vitalogy are especially loud on reissues.

Def a difference imo, but it depends on which album.  That’s what makes vinyl interesting, there’s a ton of variables at play.

Price is worth it if you’re really into sound quality.
If not stick with the repress

    Ten OP definitely sounds better

I find Ten, Vs, and Vitalogy sound much better in original pressings. The reissues for those records sound very "flat" with little to no dynamic range in comparison.  My original Ten is beat up pretty bad but it still sounds way better than the lifeless 2011 release with the Sepia toned jacket. I was disappointed to hear that the newer release of Ten with the original Purple/Pink jacket used the same disc/master as the 2011 Sepia release (minus the BoB remix).
The reissues for No Code and Yield, sound pretty good, not far off from the originals IMO. I will often spin the reissues of those albums to give my originals a break.
I've heard good things about the reissues of Binaural and Riot Act, I never did get the re-releases to compare.
I did do a A-B test with my buddy's reissue of ST (Avocado), neither is exceptional as they are both mixed pretty loud, but the original gets a slight edge IMO.

Also, the mix on the s/t reissue is totally different than the original.

I have a few of the originals and think that the both VS and Vitalogy are more lively in the original vs the repress.  I find the repressings to be a bit dull.

This, definitely a difference. There are actually differences in different cuts of the reissues.

CD or vinyl cover? Which is better? Wonder why the LP cover is slightly different? Was this ever explained?

OG Vs. and Vitalogy are noticeably better than the reissues. If you’re into audio quality it’s worth it.

@MedozK might be able to lend some insight into that.

I was at a record shop yesterday and they had a sealed original pressing of Binaural. They wanted $300 for it. I considered it for a minute - but I am happy with my reissue. Had it been an original Vs I would have gone for it.

I recently got back in to vinyl, and was so disappointed with the Riot Act repress...it's dull and lifeless. Also the purple Ten is no hit sound wise, but sure looks cool on the spinner.

I had to laugh at my almost 4 year old post above this. I was balking at a $300 OG Binaural. However, since I made that post I have upped my vinyl collecting and have spent a small fortune on OG sealed Ten, Vs, Vitalogy, No Code, Lost Dogs, Mirror Ball, and Into the Wild. I have opened and enjoyed all but Ten and No Code. I am fine with my reissues of those. I should have bought that Binaural when I had the chance.

As disgusting as this sounds - the BoB remix has been released with the purple/pink jacket too.

Where are the principles I wonder?

Not totally unusual of a design practice

What I don’t like about reissues is like with LO2L - the new cover looks like ass compared to the old one.

Purple 10 sounds great to me. Hold that sucker to the light and it comes alive ;). I'm not an audiophile.

I have found the 45 Vs to best the OG.  Overall I just don't think PJ studio records sound very good, whether OG or reissue.  They feel like a wall of noise most of the time, with little nuance.

Agreed. As good of a job Levi has done with the 45 pressings of Yield and Vs, no album sounds phenomenal on vinyl. Maybe PJ has all their masters (but also they were signed to Sony so they may not have the final masters and Sony doesn’t releases their masters) so one day I’d really like some audiophile cuts.

In 2023 then? I must have skipped it because I am a good boy.

But didn't I buy a 45rpm Yield album... why did I do that then. Can't keep track.

As far as the 45 yield and vs cuts, it just allows more information on each track, so they sound more dynamic then the original. It also depends on your set up. Speakers pre amp etc. i find all the og from ten to riot act sound better then the 2016 repress. I would really love a 45 rpm of Binaural for its 25 year anniversary in May!,,,!!
