Coming out worldwide on Friday, March 14th: Grammy-winning producer and percussionist, Barrett Martin, presents his 11th studio album, “Atmospheric Tremblings." Here the group enters new territory with an album of 15 ambient compositions inspired by Barrett’s work on the Condor Deep Space Telescope in southern New Mexico. After assisting in the assembly and alignment of the telescope, Barrett noticed that some of the distant star formations captured in the telescope’s photos, looked more like musical notations. Drawing from John Cage’s theory that music often appears in natural landscapes, Barrett took blank music staff paper and laid it over the star photos. He then sketched out these "star melodies," which became the foundational ideas for the album. Referencing the earliest Arabic names for the stars, these compositions feature Barrett playing a variety of instruments including: piano, upright bass, kalimbas, gamelans, and an unusual, bowed vibraphone technique. Assisting him in the studio are percussionist Lisette Garcia, trumpeter Dave Carter, saxophonist Skerik, and Arabic oud performances from Iraqi legend, Rahim Alhaj, and Chilean-American virtuoso, Alain Johannes. “Atmospheric Tremblings represents a more mystical, experimental side to my compositional style, in this case, working directly with astrophysicists and astronomers to create music based on star formations and extragalactic structures in deep space. It feels like the most adventurous and beautiful solo album I have ever made.” -Barrett Martin

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smSf5yZf2XA

Barrett produces an album for the first generation blues singer, Cedell Davis. During the studio sessions, legendary rockers stop by and up and coming musicians collaborate with Cedell. Guest musicians include Duff McKagan, Eva Walker, Peter Buck, Ayron Jones, Zakk Binns, Scott McCaughey, Annie Jantzer, Mike McCready, and Van Conner.

The history of American music is Black music, specially music of the Mississippi Delta. It emerged in the late 1800s and every form of popular American music can trace its roots back to there: Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll, Country, Blue Grass, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Hip Hop, and every other sub genre you can imagine. What’s remarkable about this unique history is that this music was made by African American men and women, many of whom were the children of slaves. They developed their musical art under the weight of extreme racial prejudice and political and economic oppression, yet they produced the foundation for American music as we know it today. This 3rd episode of my Singing Earth music series was directed by Tad Fettig, and it is the story of one of those original blues singers named Cedell Davis. He was born in 1926, and I had the great honor of recording 3 albums with him between 2001 and 2015. This episode contains archival footage from our recording sessions in 2015, when I brought Cedell to Seattle to record with my best musical friends: Duff McKagan, Eva Walker, Peter Buck, Ayron Jones, Mike McCready, Greg & Zakk Binns, Annie Jantzer, Jack Endino, Scott McCaughey, Skerik, Dave Carter, and Evan Flory-Barnes. It was also the last recording session I ever did with my Screaming Trees bandmate, Van Conner.

All of us musicians have a career because of the Bluesmen and Blueswomen of the American South. This is real history and real soul, and I promise, this episode will crack your heart wide open.

    Love to all, Barrett Martin

Hey folks, I’m happy to announce that episode #4 of our Singing Earth series is out now. You can watch it on your smart TV on the VEVO network or in the link below.
For this episode, director Tad Fettig and I went to Iceland to record the incredible singing and storytelling of Eurovision finalists “Systur” and singer-songwriter Daniel Hjalmtysson. We were also joined by British singer-songwriter Duke Garwood, and former Nirvana and Soundgarden member (and US Army Green Beret) Jason Everman. We had such a great time traveling across the Icelandic landscape while recording with these incredibly talented artists. It really is the most cinematically and musically enchanting episode we’ve made so far so I hope you enjoy it!

International sales are now available for "The Greatest Band That Ever Wasn't." Because of the cost of international shipping, we’re doing special pricing that comes with bonus books and CDs. I have signed copies of my best-selling Screaming Trees memoir, “The Greatest Band That Ever Wasn’t,” which comes with a bonus book and album download, “Stillpoint” (about meditations on Nature), and my best-selling CD, “Transcendence.” Additionally, I have first edition copies of my first two books, “The Singing Earth,” (which helped launch my VEVO TV series), as well as “The Way Of The Zen Cowboy,” (about growing up in the Pacific Northwest around cowboys and WWII veterans). And if you want the whole catalog of 4 books with multiple album downloads and CDs, we have a bundle price for that. The link below has all the packages and pricing, and it’s also in the bio. Sure, you can buy all this stuff from Amazon, but when you buy from our indie publishing house, Sunyata Books, you help us grow and sign other writers. So thank you for supporting independent publishing around the world! Barrett

I saved this book story for last, since it’s about my very first book, The Singing Earth. Many of you might remember about 10 years ago when I started sharing stories from the chapters in this book on FB, and this was way before we had “reels.” When my publishing company switched distributors about a year ago, I was in South America on tour for 7 months. When we got back home to Washington, there was a large palate of books from my old distributor, and it had several boxes of the first edition of The Singing Earth – complete with its soundtrack CD (now it’s a digital download). It sold well, but these boxes had been in a corner of their warehouse in unmarked boxes, totally forgotten about. I wrote this book primarily to do two things: firstly to show how similar people are around the world, and conversely, how diverse their music is based on cultural and environmental factors. The second thing was more of a wish, that people should travel in their young lives so that they understand the importance of human rights, and the protection of our global environments. When we understand these principles of human existence, we all live much, much better. So if you want a signed, first edition copy of The Singing Earth, complete with its CD soundtrack (!) I am also including a signed copy of The Way Of The Zen Cowboy, which also has a soundtrack download inside the book. And you also get a CD of my best-selling album, “Transcendence.” So that’s 2 books, 2 CDs, and a soundtrack download for the price of one book, as we clear out this old inventory and make way for the new. And we’re finally doing international shipping if you live in a different country, we’ll get them to you.

    Thank you! Barrett
