My expectations were high at the second 2003 Camden show.   Ed said before the encore that they were going to play a lot of requests.  Sweet?  And then the encore was:

Jeremy, Small Town, Better Man, Daughter, Alive.  Ha.
Well, those sound like the songs that the average Pearl Jam fan would request. It makes me think of when I see Jeff Tweedy and people shout out "California Stars" and "Jesus, etc."-- as if there's any chance he won't be playing those songs. I imagine them telling all their friends, "OMG! Jeff Tweedy played my request!" without realizing that he plays it virtually every night.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

This was my first PJ concert and I thought it was the best encore ever plus fucking up. Some perspective.
Of course it is hard to disagree as those are great songs.  It was my 10th show that tour and I was chasing songs at that point.
that was show 7 of 11 for me that year.  Saw pj 7 times that July.
I was still in college.  When they announced Boston III awesomeness, I got in the car the night before and drove to Boston last minute (about 14 hours I think).  Had to ditch the car as transmission was having issues when I got there.  Had to take the bus home.  My parents were ticked "how many shows will be enough?"
    That s a great story!!
I'll ride the wave where it takes me......

Only Stevie got scrapped (a shame). A show is better than no show, or no band.

I'll keep seeing shows as long as they tour places that are new to me. Otherwise I'll be content with a couple shows a year.  Awesome shows, but the anticipation of they could play anything was a lot of the fun (and the fact they did play anything).  Now, 18 of 23 songs are predictable from about a song list of 50.   And then the other 50 they sprinkle in are covers, or deep cuts like Dissident and Animal.

Not complaining.  Different era for the band.

Tonight's performance of "Lightning Bolt" notwithstanding, what I don't like about these setlists is that, aside from Dark Matter tracks, the entire rest of the set could have been played in 1998. It's 2024. Tonight's set included exactly two Pearl Jam songs from the 27-year period from 1997 through 2023.

P.S. thanks for following along. I'm no Dimi, but I always love reading these, so I don't mind making them (fast & loose!)

Shameless plug: I'm going to Wrigley for the 1st time! Shows #24 & #25 for me. Bringing my buddy who's NEVER seen the boys live (and it's his 2nd favorite band!)

We've moved & shaked to the following pairs, but we are always looking to upgrade:

N1 - Field M, Row 23 (back row, easy access)
N2 - Field AB, Row 1 (front, but in the back)😅

If anyone's got a bead on closer seats, or GA, hit me up! And I'll make sure someone on here gets these in return🤘

Have a good night, drive safe, and see you in Sweet Home Chicago😎

    🤙

  • I'm kind of over the setlist thing. I've never been a song chaser by any means, but definitely love the unknown of what they are going to play.

Early in this tour it did bother me and with six shows I definitely debated going to all of them. But they are Vegas, Chicago and Ohana so sort of hard to hate going to any of those places. That said I did do a lot of back and forth on Chicago. Vegas was too early in the run and my only sort of likes music wife just loves Ohana, so it was sort of the one to wrestle with on time and money. But I made the choice to go and honestly can't wait. I know I might not be blown away, but I suppose who knows.

Of course even if the catalog has shrunk the sets are still mostly different each night and that is still a surprise. It is also still Pearl Jam and I know we all wonder how much more we'll get. I look at the last two shows and I think tonight's was way better, but I doubt I'd turn down being at either if I could.

Maybe this is the new Pearl Jam, and we'll all debate how many we do next time, or maybe it will change back once Dark Matter cools some. But it's still pretty great to follow along and even better to be there.

Yeah. Don't know if it was the music video, or the Spawn one. I prefer the former.

When they said that a couple who had been to 57 shows made a request and then proceeded to play lightning bolt I thought who requests lightning bolt especially after 57 shows.

I will say. The band seemed to really be enjoying themselves. They seemed youthful and grateful. I think that’s a great sign. I had a blast.
  • That's a good looking setlist. Glad to see Lightning Bolt get another play at last, and still having 7 new songs in is very cool.

Austin 2 last year - the last bit of the encore was SOLAT/Jeremy/Better Man/Alive/RiTFW/Y Led - and it was amazing. The rarities earlier in the night were great too but just to play a run of songs that the whole place goes crazy for all in a row gives its own kind of special energy.

That whole set with the exception of a too-unrehearsed-to-have-bothered-with Habit was just fantastic.
