It's a toss up between the 1992 MTV unplugged version and teh Benaroya Hall version. The unplugged version though, i love how eddie sings "i'm surrounded by some kids that play", in my opinion i think that they should've recorded it that way and still sing it like that :)

This is an awesome song, a true PJ classic
    7/2/06 - Denver, CO
    6/12/08 - Tampa, FL
    8/23/09 - Chicago, IL
9/28/09 - Salt Lake City, UT (11 years too long!!!)
    9/03/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 1
    9/04/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 2

I wasnt at the show but Penn state in 03 was fucking sick..love it.. I dont know if the crowd chanting"let Stone sing" had anything to do with it but Ed sounded prime...and Mike's Guiter work was amazing!!!

Unplugged by a country mile. I love the different melody of the second verse that eddie sang and I love the "we belong together" tag. simply my favourite version by a long way.

Same here love the unplugged version.

I just watched it again... it blows my mind, the emotion that he put into it. When he starts singing "we...we....we belong together" it makes me want to cry... not many songs do that to me.

Hmmm... I guess almost every version of Black are absolutly beautiful... I always cry... at least can never avoid some tears... But maybe, when Eddie decides to sing, just at the end something like "these people don't understand, they don't understand, that weee, weee belong togetherrrr, togetherrrrr... uhhhh..."... now that really makes me burst into tears, and all the memories........

1/15/95. Constitution Hall Washington D.C.. One of the first shows with Jack Irons. This may be my all time favortie bootleg. "Black" was absolutely unreal and the sound quality of the Bootleg is great. The ending of "Black" is a perfect blend of all the instruments. Still gives me chills.

I think Camden II from this past tour was unreal. I've seen it live a bunch and that is far and away my favorite. Unplugged is great though as well, but everytime I hear the Camden boot I get chills.

unplugged by far ...but it's such a good song that it sounds amazing each and every time, even when you sing it in your head.

    +1

There are a few "best version of Black" threads. Pittsburgh has gotten a lot of nods in the ones since last summer. I was there, and have been to a few other shows. It was the most amazing version I've seen, and several 10+ show vets around me agreed.

yeah you're being different but you are right. i know it's a matter of a opinion but i can't believe all these people saying how great the benaroyal hall version is. i mean i always love this song, but thats probably one of my least favorites. i don't mind when you can hear the crowd singing along but i don't like it when ed stops singing and just lets the crowd take over. i also prefer the electric. anyway i'm sure there are better versions but pittsburgh is one of my favs as well. hamburg from '00 was good too. and i also really like the unplugged version but the sound quality of the recordings i've heard have been sub par.

Try Fox Theater (Atlanta) 4/3/94. Mike's guitar is absolutely writhing in pain @ around 4:30. And Ed conveys all the anger & frustration that's been lost since this song became one of Ed's wine breaks (see the next suggestion).

Ed has his gravel in full force during the We Belong Together tag:
    "I don't...I don't think...these people understand...oh they don't understand...oh no one understands...we belong together...together..."

And then does some growls to round it out.

MSG - I was there, it was good, definitely one of my favorites. Completely different feel as Fox. I'd say this is my favorite of the "new" ones.

Jones Beach II - 8/24/00 Mike has a really good outtro as well. What a time...

I was always in the "unplugged is the best version of black" camp. Then I saw that somebody thought the '94 Atlanta was the best version. My first thought was yea, epic show, they must just have thought great version of black. But I have converted, I truly think that is the best version of black.. that I have heard. I have been convinced early on that this is PJ's masterpiece and so I am always looking for better versions, and will look at every version in this thread, but until then, '94 Atl takes the prize for me.

i was just hearing black, and then it came to me this question, what's the best version of black???, including live and studio
i'd say that the benaroya hall version i don't know the year, i think 2000.
its awsome, especially when the people sang the last part, it gives me creeps each time i hear it
    post your opinion

The original from 10? How can you improve on a 10? :)
Dalai Lama—To say that humility is an essential ingredient in our pursuit of spiritual transformation may seem to be at odds with what I have said about the need for confidence. But there is clearly a distinction to be made between valid confidence or self-esteem, and conceit - which we can describe as an inflated sense of importance, grounded in a false image of self.
