I like that at least our government is trying to be prepared, but it seems so far fetched. I mean, MAGAts aren't organized enough to have their own army. Most of them are too fucking soft to do anything but ram their giant trucks into a trans kids' lemonade stand.

You saw Jan 6. that was chaos of idiots.

Don’t underestimate the militia movement and particularly the white Christian nationalists of same. 1/6 was a dry run and they care about their martyred imprisoned freedom fighters. More likely that we’ll see random acts of violence committed by lone wolf actors and subsequent retaliation by the government or opposition. What may begin as peaceful protests will be seized upon by shit stirrers and dissocial media to fan the flames of mayhem. Instead of one Kyle Rottenhouse, there will be legions. Instead of one car driving into Heather Hyers at counter demonstrations, there will be multiple. Just wait until thousands of people are turned away from the polls because repub secretaries of state purged voter rolls. Or POOTWH starts delivering on his campaign promises.

Those chaos of idiots had vehicles full of weapons just over the border from DC.

Sometimes I think it’s the ones who don’t attend the rallies we need to watch out for.  I think there’s people willing, ready, able, and looking forward to civil war.  Of course I have no facts to back up my feelings.  All I know is Jim jones, David koresh, they were all quiet, till they weren’t.  And what caused the final reactions?  The government.

for the life of me, I will never understand how people can be so fucking stupid to believe that "donald trump gets it". He gets NOTHING that normal people have to struggle with. NOTHING.

And Donald Trump’s wife is an immigrant. He knows the process. He gets it. He’s fallen in love with somebody from a different country as well. So he knows better than anybody that our families should be treated the same as everyone else.

There was a piece in the L.A. Times last week reporting on Trump's fundraising in Beverly Hills and Orange County.* They quoted two different attendees who said that, when Trump was president, there were no wars. (One said "no world wars.") Neither one seemed to remember that, notwithstanding other wars that were happening in the world between 2017 and 2021, the United States was at war in Afghanistan for the entire duration of Trump's term-- a war that, not incidentally, ended in Biden's first year as president. (And the same people who pretend this war wasn't happening when Trump was president likely simultaneously blame Biden for "botching" the withdrawal of U.S. forces.)

One of these people also said that "everything was going fine" when Trump was president. He seems to have forgotten that, during the last year of Trump's presidency, hundreds of thousands of Americans (and millions around the world) died due to a once-in-a-century pandemic. Everything was definitely not "going fine." Again, these same people likely rail against the "lockdowns" and other affronts to their "freedom" like masks, conveniently forgetting that Trump was the president when those restrictions were put in place.

There are a lot of people who inhabit an alternate reality, and they are blissfully unaware of the cognitive dissonance between what they believe to be true and what is demonstrably true. On the one hand, I think, "It must be nice." You know, ignorance is bliss. On the other hand, I feel bad for them because it has to be difficult to go through life believing in lies and seeing conspiracies everywhere.

*Of course, when Biden held a fundraiser a week later with rich Hollywood types, Trump's people attacked Biden for being "out of touch" while conveniently ignoring that Trump had just spent a couple of days in the same state hobnobbing with a bunch of rich people to drum up campaign donations.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

I think you meant “drum up money for his legal fees.” There is a difference between the two candidates. Slight but it’s there.

Throw out the pandemic from this conversation, and what you see is the reality that is created in right wing media.  How these people live day to day doesn't change from Trump to Biden.  What changed was the tone of the news and what they are fed.  I read Fox News online every day and you can see how they shape the news and what they feed to consumers.  For example, they will bury good economic news in the Fox business section where no one is reading.  They will highlight a random murder in NY as representative of society today.

Why leave the pandemic out of the conversation? If the question is, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?," it's useful to remember that, four years ago, shit was bad. And that happened on Trump's watch.

It reminds me of Giuliani in 2016 glossing over the September 11 attacks when comparing the records of George W. Bush and Barack Obama with respect to terrorist attacks in the U.S. during their terms. You don't get to just say Bush kept us safe "other than 9/11." It's like "Other than your husband's murder, how did you enjoy the play, Mrs. Lincoln?" (To be clear, I'm not saying Bush was to blame for the attacks, nor am I saying that Trump was to blame for the pandemic-- but these things happened on their respective watches and we shouldn't pretend otherwise.)
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

Polls may not mean much. From Letter From An American:

In a celebration of Juneteenth on June 10, 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris noted: “Across our nation, we witness a full-on attack on hard-fought, hard-won freedoms and rights, including the freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body; the freedom to be who you are and love who you love openly and with pride; the freedom from fear of bigotry and hate; the freedom to learn and acknowledge our nation’s true and full history; and the freedom that unlocks all others: the freedom to vote.”

for the life of me, I will never understand how people can be so fucking stupid to believe that "donald trump gets it".

I wasn't seeking to answer the question of whether you're better off now or then.  I was furthering your other point about the alternate reality that right wing creates.  I say "throw out the Pandemic" because that isn't an alternate reality, we all experienced that.

Ah, gotcha. But my point was that the idea that "everything was going fine" during the Trump years is also an alternate reality. I would argue that there were a lot of ways that everything was not going fine, and I can imagine a Trump fan arguing some of those, but the hundreds of thousands of dead Americans and the economic and social dislocation due to the pandemic were pretty much inarguably "not fine."
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

We need a floor vote at the Democratic National Convention with several potential candidates being nominated. I'd take the following, if only because they have integrity and can communicate the policies of a dem administration. Anyone of the below would destroy POOTWH in a debate but he'd run scared and refuse to debate. Not likely to see a floor fight for the nomination either. UGH.

    Gina Raimondo
    Gavin Newsome
    Pete Buttigieg
    Kamala Harris
    Josh Shapiro
