Surprised at how many DM are played each night especially the same city 2 show nights.

I'm not really surprised since this is the Dark Matter Tour. And it's also consistent with how Pearl Jam has approached prior tours. Even with Gigaton, despite the year-and-a-half delay (and two full years for a proper tour), there was an effort to play a lot of the new tracks until Matts COVID diagnosis forced them to radically change the plan.PJNB said:Surprised at how many DM are played each night especially the same city 2 show nights.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -
Check LA N1 and N2 2022 out. Its not even close to the same.BF25394 said:

I was at those shows. They played six songs from Gigaton the first night, after having played eight at the prior show in San Diego. Given that it had been two years since the album came out, that's still a pretty serious commitment to playing their newest material.PJNB said:

The focus on pre 2000’s stuff in the other spots is very intriguing to me. The setlists have been pretty good, but I’d love to hear a little more Binural, Avacado, etc instead of 5-6 songs from Ten.
However, given the nature of the DM tour, those songs are probably being squeezed due to the need to feature 7-8 DM songs per night. My hope is by US leg 2 they’ll cut that down to about 5. DM stuff sounds good live though, so it’s not the worst decision to play it!Seattle 8-8-18

They are playing 18 new songs roughly over two nights now.
Its a big difference imo.0 -
They know DM is a much better album. 30+% of the set is a lot though. Five songs a night seems plenty.PJNB said:

I don't disagree with you that it's a big difference, but that was why I singled out Gigaton, i.e., because the circumstances of the Gigaton tour were unlike any prior tour, where a lot of time elapsed between the album's release and the shows because of the postponements, and even still they played a significant number of songs from it, at least at the start before the tour got derailed. I still think their approach this time is consistent with their general M.O. when they have a new album. The shows in the fall of 2009 were heavy on Backspacer. The shows in the fall of 2013 were heavy on Lightning Bolt. Etc.PJNB said:

I don't think it's that. I think they were psyched to play Gigaton songs, but by the time they got the chance to do it, two years had passed. Eight Gigaton songs in San Diego and six on Night 1 in L.A. still shows they wanted to play the new stuff. Once Matt went down, those songs fell out of rotation because Josh only knows the first five albums (by his own account-- he told me this directly) and Richard was learning on the fly.iOnlyownMymind said:

I would happily replace much of the Ten material with stuff from Riot Act through Gigaton, but I'm generally going to enjoy whatever they play. I'm not chasing any songs, although I do have favorites, of course.Hankj25 said:The focus on pre 2000’s stuff in the other spots is very intriguing to me. I think the issue is how it's contributing to so many repeats on 2 night stands so far. 9/25 repeats with around half coming from Dark Matter is a lot. If we were getting the full album over both nights with maybe a song or two repeated, totally cool.BSully said:

Of course they are heavy with the new album. Everyone should have expected that.BF25394 said:

9 shows a night though is still a surprise. Its a lot.0 -
I think Vegas 2 had 6 DM songs, and they played 10 unique out of the 11 over 2 nights. I wanted to hear Waiting for Stevie again though.

It's totally cool either way. Most acts repeat way more than nine songs out of 25 in a two-night stand. Springsteen played two nights in L.A. last month and repeated 23 songs out of 31 the second night.pjl44 said:

I typically don't go to more than one show on any given tour for this reason. Pearl Jam has been a very rare exception.BF25394 said:

And by the way I also understand how this makes no difference for some people. U2 has a fairly standard set on a given tour and I know more than one person who will follow them around. It's just not for me. There are just way too many shows around right now. Not to mention prices being what they are.0
