My only setlist grievance is the same grievance I've had for about a decade now: starting the show with three or four slow songs or ballads. I've always liked songs like Release or Long Road as an opener. But after that...let's rock (unless it's Arms Aloft lol). I'm not into songs like Nothingman or Low Light as the second song.
Easy for me to say though. I do suspect this is something they do to ease Eddie's voice into the show. Dude is pushing 60 now. Might need to warm up with a few slower songs before yelling and screaming songs like Go, Do The Evolution, etc.2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. yeah, when the 2 slow song opening thing started (on the Lightning Bolt tour) it made the start a bit weird. Preferring the slower stuff, I enjoy getting songs like Nothingman and Lowlight, but it's a bit "jarring" flowwise."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0

It just feels (for me anyway) that the show doesn't truly begin until they play something upbeat. There's all this anticipation for them to come out onto the stage, but then those slower songs to open kinda take the wind out of my sails. I'm with you, nothing against songs like Nothingman. But I prefer songs like that as a bit of a break in the action rather than a way to start the show.Spiritual_Chaos said:yeah, when the 2 slow song opening thing started (on the Lightning Bolt tour) it made the start a bit weird. Yeah that's fair. I never liked that sit-down, Led Zeppelin-style acoustic set. I guess I just miss the unpredictability of say the 2003 tour. Now, while it's hard to predict what song they'll play at any moment, it's pretty easy to tell what TYPE of song they're going to play at any moment...if that makes sense.spankyMP said:I prefer the slow start over the slow second set that can drain a little of the energy that was built up.2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. This .... We need to remember they're not only playing to people going to multiple shows. I would bet that a much higher % of people at a show are only going to one show as I am and always do (I did do 2 shows for the avocado tour, one being the Astoria in London which was a no brainer)Lifted said:As someone who loves Dark Matter and only plans on going to one show on the tour, I was relieved to see that they played the majority of the album both shows so far. People complaining about shelling out so much money on multiple shows, that's their prerogative, but also their choice. Just like it's the band's choice to play whatever they want. They're obviously very proud of this album, and they should be.
The reality is that the majority of people at each of these shows are only going to one show and Pearl Jam wants to play the new stuff. It's not like they didn't almost completely change the song selections for the rest of the setlist outside of Dark Matter songs. I would think that should be appeasing enough to all but a small fraction of the fan base.
It's similar to people hoping for less 'ten' but in all my shows, I've only seen Jeremy once! I'd love to hear it again 🤞0 -
But, my preference if I had a choice..
Rock from the start of 1 slow burner max
Zero..ZERO covers 😊
And no more yellow ledbetter.
All this said and done, I've never come away disappointed0 -
I actually don't mind those 4 being played in a row, they flow together so nicely on the album, why not hear how is sounds live as well?

If they had kept on and played the whole album straight through on Night 1, and then done the same thing on Night 2, would people have the same complaint as they do having heard four songs in a row from the new album on both nights? I suspect they wouldn't. And I suspect that if they played the album straight through on Night 1 and then didn't do it on Night 2, people who went to Night 2 only would have complained about that.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0

I think a lot of people are quick to defend PJ on this take. I think its more of a "wow, that's different" than a complaint. At least that's how I take it. I'm going to Portland and if they do it again that would be 'odd", to me at least. This is just based off the history off the bands set list, not a complaint.0

To be a devil's advocate, if they had played a song like Why Go, Animal, or Hail Hail in that spot (ya know....like they should've), the entire pavilion might've imploded from the eruption from the crowd and we may all be dead right now. The crowd was ready to explode as they finished up Release. And then.....awkward silence for about 3 minutes lolSVRDhand13 said:

I think you should go back to the 95 tour and check out where they slotted Last Exit, Spin The Black Circle, Tremor Christ, and Corduroy. Four songs in a row, usually in the same spot in the set, in that order. This isn't new.mcgruff10 said:

If you had to go all the way back to 95 to find an example that is the same as Vancouvers 4 in a row I would say we could probably call it something that is at the very least out of the ordinary for this band and definitely worthy of discussion.cweeks1111 said:

I'm gonna say I don't think it's a big deal if they play the first 4 of DM in order every show this entire tour. We are clearly getting variety in the burners to start, the 2nd half of the main set, and in the encore.
