April 16th, 2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of arguably (including by most folks posting on this board) the best episode of SNL in history and that being with Emilio Estevez & Pearl Jam.

But here's the funny thing:  Emilio apparently wasn't even supposed to host.  It was apparently supposed to be Drew Barrymore (see IMDB link below).

From the article:

Trivia
The 1994 book "Saturday Night Live: The First Twenty Years" features a photograph of bulletin board in Lorne Michaels's ninth-floor office listing all the 19th season's hosts and musical guests at the time Alec Baldwin & Kim Basinger/UB40 (1994) was in production in the section called 'A Week in the Life of SNL'. It reveals that Drew Barrymore was scheduled to host for the second time (her first since 1982) on April 16th, but had to be back out at the last minute. She was replaced by Emilio Estevez. Barrymore would finally host again in 1999, in Drew Barrymore/Garbage (1999).

Dave Attell, who would have a show called Insomniac on MTV, was one of the writers for this episode.

They are one of the few bands to have been given the opportunity to play 3 songs during their stint:  Not For You, Rearview Mirror and Daughter.

Interestingly enough, they have played three times on SNL during the month of April: April 11th, 1992 (Alive & Porch); April 16th, 1994 (see above); April 15th, 2006 (Worldwide Suicide & Severed Hand) and one time in March, on March 13th, 2010 (Just Breathe & Unthought Known).

So let's discuss and enjoy the 30th anniversary of what many people consider their favorite episode of Saturday Night Live.

Amazing. That performance of “Not for You”: Just wow.

I remember watching that episode. I was in a daze, having just returned home from studying in Ireland with a new wife and baby, unemployed and in the aftershock of Cobain’s death. The music of Peal Jam was a comfort and an inspiration in those anxious days.

The timing of Pearl Jam playing SNL after Kurt’s death was huge. I remember rushing home to see it at my friend’s house. Blown away by still my favorite live performance of Not For You. 2nd favorite version: Gorge 2005
