Thanksgiving

I am in charge of the pie.
So, I am making an apple, a pumpkin, and maybe cheery. But for sure apple and pumpkin.
My wife is in charge of the mashed potatoes.

We are going to my sister in laws. She always puts out a lovely spread. It's always a great time.

So, what are your plans? Where are you going and what's on the menu?

I look forward to the next day when I make turkey salad w leftovers on rye.

Hosting some family....think it will only be 7 or 8 of us (sending plates to 2 normal participants who are unable to join due to one having surgery the day prior).
Turkey, mashed pots, gravy, stuffing - the normal stuff.  Some veg.  I froze a pumpkin pie that I made when we picked pumpkins last month and we have another coming from the boy's school PTA drive.  A blueberry crumble.
A few of the guests will bring something....one of them brings the worst shit every year.  Shudder to think of what she will bring this year.
(If it is GBC, I'm chucking it, lol)

I will post the caramelized onion tart recipe for those interested. But the recipe is at my parent’s house so when I get there tomorrow night I will post photos of the recipe, and also of the tart once I make it.

usual stuff, just me and my parents. Last few years we've been getting the pre-cooked turkey with various sides from a local catering place so we're continuing that again.

Cooking for 12.  Two turkey breasts, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn pudding,
green beans and tomatoes, roasted brussels sprouts and a ridiculous amount of desserts.

    Pumpkin cheesecake
    Lemon cranberry gooey butter cake
    Peanut butter pie
    Pecan pie
    Coconut cream pie
Various other pastries and cookies from an ancient local bakery

And I am very grateful for all of it.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    Nice shirt.

I have a funny story about corn pudding. Several years ago we went to my sister's in-laws for Thanksgiving. Her sister-in-law made a corn pudding. When we went to eat it, there was something off about it. It wasn't disgusting but had this weird sweet taste to it. I could only eat a few bites. It turns out that she accidentally used banana pudding in the recipe. We all had a good laugh about - including her.

A few of you asked for the onion tart recipe. Here it is. I hope you can read it. If not, let me know. As you can see the ingredients list store bought pie crusts. But you can certainly make your own. I am going to make this either tonight or tomorrow. I will post some photos. If any of you end up making this sometime let me know how it turned out.

On another note as I was posting this I thought it might be fun to start a recipe swap thread where we can post cool recipes. I have some good family recipes that others here might like. I am sure you all do as well. Should we start a recipe thread?
  • Thank you.
I'm gonna wait until you post a pic or 2 of those tarts before I attempt to make it.
I want to get an idea. Before I screw it all up!

i usually went to my mom's house for Thanksgiving and my sister, her husband, and my uncle would visit, but my mom moved away (she lives closer to my sister now actually in upstate New York now). So I don't really have any plans. Maybe go to a restaurant that serves Thanksgiving dinner or maybe i'll just order pizza  I did buy a pumpkin pie (my favorite) so definitely having some of that.

Escarole soup. The wife’s family likes to make an incredibly time consuming soup to eat while cooking an incredibly time consuming meal…so tonight prepping stuffing and all and eating soup and drinking wine.

I was responsible for the stock and browning the meatballs.

As for plans, driving all fucking over…Philly to the Wilkes barre area and back for my family then to the in laws to close out the night with lots of good wine

Looks great^^gg!!  @Get_Right spatchcocked turkey. Thanks for suggesting. Dry brined for a couple days uncovered in fridge. Ultimately seasoned with salt pepper paprika brown sugar thyme. Softened butter smeared it all over. 4 splits of pinot grisio (sp?). A small handful of salt.
Mesquite chips in foil bags with holes. Got gas grill going all four burners. Chips smoking. Threw turkey on after about 20 min, turned off two middle burners. Lowered the others. Now wait, put up some decorations, drink mad amounts of coffee, and hardest part is not to peek.

Funny when you talk turkey everyone has a different way of cooking it.

    Smoke smells so good.

Happy Thanksgiving all. Lots of ❤️

maybe 15 or so people at my BIL’s…I love the guy and he’s maybe 1/4 mile away, which is good for the tipsy drive home.

he’s a good cook….he’ll be baking and smoking a turkey. his wife is a terrible cook and does the same sides every year that no one eats (if they do, it’s only out of courtesy)

this is one of the few times the BIL’s house gets cleaned….the family is a bunch of absolute slobs…we always say “it looks like a bomb went off in there”….luckily, their personal hygiene is fine.

bloody mary’s at noon at another venue.

and, god, let’s hope my cowboys don’t lay an egg vs. the commies.

Love it and hope you post a pic or two! My 14 lb turkey fresh from the farm is sitting in an apple sage wet brine. We will use the injector and add some broth flavored with Bell's poultry seasoning. I think I am going regular roast Turkey this year.  I will try to post some pics of the bird and all of the sides. Happy Thanksgiving Y'all!
