"Dressing for success" is just a bunch of total bullshit IMO. To me is just seems like a way for people to pretend they're respectable, or for respectable people to waste money just so that shallow people will think a certain way about them because of how they look/dress. Fashion is a form of brainwashing as far as I'm concerned. Cleanliness and being presentable is important, but shit like what style of shoes or shirts or pants you wear meaning something valuable? What a ridiculous social construct.

disagree. I gotta say, I sometimes "feel" more professional when I'm dressed professionally, and it may sound odd, but it actually sometimes even makes me act more motivated and professional. I didn't realize it until our company went from business casual to more casual. (we used to have casual fridays, now it's just everyday)

Was at an event last night with a bunch of other professionals, at what I would describe as a very exclusive group gathering related to pharma. Looked around with interest at what people were wearing. Granted, these people are not members of the DC Swamp...but many are specifically responsible for the selling, planning, and building of this city. (Philadelphia) Very serious business, for millions/billions of dollars.
Probably half of the men had modern dress shoes on. Also, the same rough percentage wore mismatched coats and pants. (Vs full suits that would have been almost every person a few years ago) I was one of the people in both of those groups.
Almost nobody wears ties to these things anymore. This was limited at 100 people and there was one guy I saw with a tie.
(For the record I love wearing full suit...old school shoes....tie. while I only wear a tie occasionally, I wear the suit and shoes OP approves of often.) Does feel good to change it up, some.
In no way was the business going on any less serious. People were most definitely "dressed for success" 0 out of 100 people looked unprofessional or like they just thew something on. (This was likely top level folks making up most of people...I think you have to get to the truly elite air of top .05% to find where serious businesspeople dress like clowns)

Aren't you in academia? Take it from someone in the corporate world. It is not bullshit. If you dress like a slob, you will be perceived as a slob. You can make up your own rules about how shallow you think that makes everyone but that doesn't change how things are
(Until you are a genius at something or are filthy rich...then you can be a slob and be succesful.)
Edit - this is not to say you have to wear very expensive clothes or be tuned into a certain fashion....but you need to dress within the established boundaries. Those are changing, btw, as many of these posts point out. The shoes are absolutely an area where this is happening
