I've been in a jazz frame of mind lately.  I was telling my wife that for me the big difference between the rock music I like and the jazz I like is that most rock is easy to listen to.  Most of it is in 4/4 time (ONE/two/three/four) and is easy to follow.
Jazz on the other hand is generally far more complex.  For me, to fully appreciate what is going on in a great jazz record, it deserves or even demands greater attention (although when I listen to any music, that's all I do).
Both are great to listen to, of course!
So that said, my current ten favorites are:

    Albert Ayler: Bells
Ornette Coleman:  This is Our Music
    John Coltrane: A Love Supreme
    Miles Davis: Kind of Blue
    Dexter Gordon: Gotham City
Wynton Marsalis: Black Codes (From the Underground)
Thelonious Monk: At the Five Spot
    Sonny Rollins: Way Out West
    Archie Shepp: Four for Trane
    Cecil Taylor: Dark to Themselves
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

    Enjoy your quest, JJ!
It was a bit difficult to compile that list.  I could easily have listed different albums by any of those musicians or listed some by other favorites by Larry Coryell, Eric Dolphy, Vince Guaraldi, Charlie Parker, Pharoah Sanders, Wayne Shorter, Sun Ra, and a bunch more.  SO much great music out there!

No he isn’t, Dave did the drums himself. I think it’s their best record in years.

I’ve been catching up on Rocky Votolato recently. I seemed to have missed a few of his middle releases but his ‘Wild Roots’ album from last year put him back on my radar.
