These "atmospheric rivers", aren't they what the washes were built for in California?

I think they were more for preventing streams from changing course.  Where I grew up in the Bay Area south of S.F., many of the creeks that fed into the bay were natural creeks.  As I kid, we use to go catch frogs and crayfish in them.  Now all (or nearly all) are concrete washes nearly devoid of anything natural besides runoff.

The winds here were super intense last night.  I had to go out at midnight and trim some branches that were beating the bedroom window and while trimming, I kept one eye over my shoulder at a couple of large pine trees that were doing the boogaloo big time and hoping they didn't come down on my head.
The amazing thing is, the power did not go out!  Big kudos to PG&E for them getting work crews out around the county lately to trim trees around power lines and beef up the power infrastructure.  They did a marvelous job!

Aftermath from last night's big wind storm. These are cable and phone lines. Amazingly, our power lines did not go down and though we had some flickering lights, the power never went out. That is amazing because the wind here was super intense.

They're saying these "atmospheric rivers" are going to continue pounding California for at least another week, maybe two.  Of biggest concern is possible to likely flood in much of Southern California, Sacramento, and the greater Bay Area.  We've had some here, but not too bad so far.
Best wishes to our members in flood zone areas.  Stay safe, keep alert.

We used to love when it rained in the high desert.  We had rivers and water everywhere for a few days.  What came next was spring and everything would be green.

Have you ever seen a desert hill green?  It is an amazing site.

The poppy yield this year should be tremendous.
