That's a tough call.  They aren't getting any younger, but they're one of the few bands that managed to keep the original lineup through their entire careers.   If you've only got so many touring years left in you, do you sit out a year,  and wait for Larry Mullen Jr. to heal up, or do hire a touring drummer.  Touch decisions to be had in the U2 camp.
They should wait they have so much money! I’ve never liked when a band replaces a member to tour!
Sometimes I don't think its only about the money.  If read stuff from people who entertain to large crowd's, whether it's sports, music, professional wrestling, musicals, plays, etc... There's something you get have an engaged audience that you can't replicate anywhere else.

Maybe I'm an optimist, but from what I gather there's nothing quite like performing in front of an engaged audience.    That being said, it doesn't sound like U2 is in any rush to tour (aside from having a new album coming out).   I imagine if Adam has a plan, and an estimated recovery plan, they can work around it, but he should probably get on it so he heals sooner rather than later (I don't imagine it's easy on the band to have not toured in 4 years, only now to have to not plan for another year or two).

from the rumors, it seems they will do a Vegas residency for a period (which will probably be pushed). So I'm sure a tour-tour is way off.

Is Eddie the only one performing for U2? There's usually 3 or 4 performers. I haven't read anything about others.
Edit: I see Brandi Carlile and Hozier are joined by an Ukrainian singer Jamala

She took the stage Sunday night to honor Grant with her band, The Highwomen, also consisting of Natalie Hemby, Marren Morris and Amanda Shires. Other stars honored Grant as well by performing some of her hit songs. Sheryl Crow sang "Baby, Baby" and gospel singers BeBe and CeCe Winans sang "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" along with Dianne Reeves, Hozier, Jamala and Michael W. Smith with the Howard Gospel Choir.

The "You and Me on the Rock" singer returned to the stage to close out the show as part of the tribute for U2, singing their song "Walk On" alongside Ukrainian singer Jamala, Dianne Reeves, Morris, Hozier and Crow.
