they actually did this on their reunion album. during the Q&A on pledgemusic, I had asked Hugh about their first demo, and he said "I'm going to go check it out to see if there's anything we could use! thanks for reminding me!". And they actually put Don't Follow The Leader on Love and Fury. Whether he was just fucking with me and had already planned on using that track, I'll never know, but they do have a tendency to look at older material when doing a new record.

and he did the same for his solo record. It was basically just a repackaged album of Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir with a few different tracks.

I've always wondered about the conditions surrounding Dale's (drummer) departure. he was their second drummer, and was with them for 20+ years. It was noted publicly as a "quitting". he even released his own statement stating it was all his decision. which I thought was legit at the time. But the past 3 years, Hugh hasn't mentioned him once. he even has gone out of his way to plug the first drummer, whom they fired because of addiction issues. Now he refers to the original band as the "fab four". for 20 years he never mentioned the first drummer ONCE. not in interviews, not in print, not on socials, not on stage, nothing. as a response to one of those posts on social media, someone responded with a pic of Dale. Hugh and the band blocked them immediately! WTF. Only the guitarist still follows Dale on social media.

either he was fired but allowed to keep his dignity, or hugh is bitter with him for quitting. if it's the latter, man, that's pretty douchey.

and after Dale left, they hired a drummer, Lyle "The Executioner". he was on the next record, played a few shows, and then he was gone. totally bizarre. nothing mentioned about him quitting, being fired, nothing. just...gone.

what is it with bands and glossing over the departure of drummers? LOL

with an all-canadian lineup, this will be an cross canada tour. I gotta be honest, I go see 3 out of 4 of these bands every time they come through. All this means is I will have to pay a hefty price to see them all on the same bill with an abbreviated and greatest hits setlist. It will be fun, but I prefer when bands tour separately.

Totally down for this tour. I had to miss the Headstones' annual Christmas so I'm aching to see them again.

Tea Party and Big Wreck are also great live, but they're not Headstones. I've only seen David Usher solo, so I can't comment on Moist, but I enjoy their studio material.

I saw Moist play the old arena in Victoria in the late 90s.  It was a pretty awesome show.  They must of been at the height of their popularity.

The interesting part for me is most of these bands aren't arena sized bands anymore.  I've seen tea party play a small theatre and a bar in the past few years.   Headstones I've only ever seen at bars.   Moist that Arena show 20+ years ago.  Big Wreck I saw for free twice (commonwealth games in Victoria and grey cup in edmonton).  I think they only play clubs.

So can four awesome but mostly club bands fill out arenas?  I think I'd like to go if tix aren't insanely expensive.  Not a lot of dead weight in that lineup.  Plus because its four bands, the sets will be shorter, so they'll be tighter with less filler.
  • HughFreakingDillonHughFreakingDillon Winnipeg Posts: 35,808
they aren't club bands at all. 3 out of the 4 (can't speak for moist), every time they are here, sell out our 1800 seater. the headstones have even done it on consecutive nights. so this arena tour makes sense. it won't be filled. they'll probably sell half the arena to start (7,000-8,000) and if it does better they'll move the stage back a bit.

fuck I hate presales. you can't get row 1-3 unless you pay for "platinum seats". AKA: triple the price.

my last post on this band was pre-fucking-pandemic. I probably would have seen them another 2-5 times in that time frame.

here's hoping November's festival show still happens.

with the festival cancelled, Headstones have posted a few pictures on their socials about something "coming soon". not sure if it's new music or some shows. hopefully both. But it appears they are back to a four piece. Rickferd Van Dyck seems to be no longer with the band. Not sure why. nothing is mentioned on his pages or theirs.

It's a shame they cancelled the tour.   They just announced that concerts can be at full capacity here in BC.  Would of been a fun show to go to.  Hopefully they do a bar show here.

it was all because that asshole Jeff Martin (Tea Party) was having trouble getting clearance to travel here from Australia.

That sucks, bud.  They should plan a special gig your backyard as a tribute to their #1 fan!

I was not aware of that.  I thought you could fly here as long as you quarantined on arrival.. one wouldn't think it would be that hard with a lot of heads up.

I was superstoked to see the headstones again, but I was also superstoked to see Moist.   I had seen them since they played the old Arena here in '97 (ish).  It was a helluva fun show.

yeah I'm not sure as to the logistics, but it was revealed that the whole cancellation revolved around Jeff and his travel issues of some sort.

I didn't realize there was a whole thread devoted to Headstones 'til just now. Saw them a handful of times in the 90s, early 2000s. And a few since they reunited (they still sound great, slightly different energy but still rock hard). Being near Kingston, they've always been a favorite of mine.

I could really go for a headstones show.  My first official date with my wife was a Headstones show at a now defunct bar called the Soundgarden.

I love seeing The Headstones when they come to down.  They always rock the place and the crowd is always super into it.   Luckily because I'm in a small town they always play our smaller bars when they come here.  Always makes for a great experience.

I also wish they'd release their albums on vinyl :)

i've been badgering Hugh for years about that. But I doubt it will happen. I have no idea how that even gets done, if the band has any say, or if it's a record company thing, not sure.

he also refuses to release a live album. he apparently hates live records. He said at the Kingston show in 2013 that they were recording that show, I asked him after if I could have a copy, he said "I'll see what I can do". I'm still waiting. lol
