    Seems like the wrong path was to ever offer vouchers for private school. Screw that. Provide public school. If parents want different, pay for it.

    I hate rulings on party lines like this.  It makes me think that (on both sides) the law is not being evaluated but personal opinions and activism is involved.  
    Well the argument is straightforward.. the gov't should not be providing tax payer dollars for religious education.  This case shows a tension between two bedrock principles: right to free exercise and the separation of church and state.  The court's conservative justices favor one provision over the other.  The liberal justices did the opposite.

    Totally agree. This whole voucher bullshit was meant to weaken public schools. I'm sure it was thought up by some rich douchebag that couldn't stand the fact that his real estate taxes were high because of school funding which cut into their tuition payments for private school.

    The whole idea creates increased costs for public schools by increasing the per student cost of infrastructure and other costs.

    I can understand the good thought behind it...allow parents to send their kids to a different school if their public school is shit and not have to foot the entire bill....but of course, it seems the bad outweighs the good on this one.

    No, the issue with Maine is that there are some rural districts without public education.  So they created a program to provide funding for private schools that were available, but excluded religious schools.  So it was not a simple question.

    The SCOTUS has become everything it was meant to combat. It is completely broken. The entire thing should be torn down, the justices dismissed, and the entire process of establishing it needs to be rewritten from scratch so that the SCOTUS is non-partisan, and the justices can actually make decisions they way they are sworn to. If that isn't done, the SCOTUS is just a contributor to America's scary decline.

    Yes I agree that vouchers are an issue.  I don't like taking money from public education.

    I wasn't even thinking about the decision you guys have been discussing - you mean the schools in Maine thing, right? I haven't really put any thought into that - haven't had time to read the details about it.

    IMO, each presidential term should come with a Supreme Court nomination with some sort of safeguard that congress cannot simply block every attempt and they need to agree on something.  Its appalling that a 1-term president who lost the popular vote was able to select 40% of the court and shape our laws long-term.
