Also, I don't think this is a repress. I read this as a fresh mastering and lacquer cut from the original tapes. I was not aware that MOFI had done Thriller before. Is that the case?

Quick lookup on Discogs shows that there is no MOFI pressing in existence today. So they will use the original masters and Krieg will do a fresh mastering, lacquer and then press. Definitely not an old plate. So yes, this will be different than any version out there today. And presumably the highest quality. The originals were probably all analog, but the 80s was a terrible time for vinyl quality and of course they will be very old and worn at this point.tempo_n_groove said:

I'm the same way about records- I've never spent $100 on a record and only a few half that much and only because they were scarce. But if someone has the bucks and is into hi-end audiophile, I can see why they would be into it.
There is a point where to me audiophile becomes absurd- I once saw in (I think it was) an Acoustics Sounds catalogue a turntable/cartridge combination that would set a buyer back $250,000. A quarter of a mil for a record player? Crazy. I just can't imagine anyone have hearing good enough to justify that, lol.

I have the AP and it's incredible. MOFI definitely has a price premium on their name and I think that's a great example. Could it be better? I suppose. Not twice as good for twice as much. There might be a MOFI, but it would be from years ago. For example there's a Sticky Fingers from the early 80's. But I've heard it's not very good, boomy. There are definitely Beatles mono releases from 2014. I have most of those and they are friggin fantastic. They were mastered from the analog whereas the stereo versions from a few years later are all digital.tempo_n_groove said:

I just went to listen to my Chess copy to see how good it sounds, a copy I bought new years ago for probably 8 or 10 bucks, and couldn't find it. I haven't listened to it in a long time. I looked everywhere. No go. I searched my Discogs collection collection, not there. Did I sell it off years ago during my years of being down and out? Could I really have done that? I'm freaking out a little bit here.

Instead of utilizing the industry-standard three-step lacquer process, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's new UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) uses only one step, bypassing two processes of generational loss. While three-step processing is designed for optimum yield and efficiency, UD1S is created for the ultimate in sound quality. Just as Mobile Fidelity pioneered the UHQR (Ultra High-Quality Record) with JVC in the 1980s, UD1S again represents another state-of-the-art advance in the record-manufacturing process. MFSL engineers begin with the original master tapes and meticulously cut a set of lacquers. These lacquers are used to create a very fragile, pristine UD1S stamper called a "convert." Delicate "converts" are then formed into the actual record stampers, producing a final product that literally and figuratively brings you closer to the music. By skipping the additional steps of pulling another positive and an additional negative, as done in the three-step process used in standard pressings, UD1S produces a final LP with the lowest noise floor possible today.
