You never know what you are going to see and hear at a PJ show and last night proved it.  When they opened with RITFW I knew it was going to be an unusual show, but could not have anticipated what we got.

That was so much fun and I can't wait to do it again tonight.  This is my first multi-show leg since 2006 and I'm glad I am going again tonight.

Pretty amazing for the band to pull off tonight’s show. Josh klinghoffer and Richard were amazing, considering they had to figure things out quickly. And, just think about it..a dude gets up one morning, knowing he’s going to a Pearl Jam show that night, and ends up playing drums with them onstage, to yellow Ledbetter, to close the night. That has to be one of that dudes life highlights and we all got to be a part of it. Pretty cool night.
Not only that but the guys kid was at the side of the stage. Talk about a superhero dad. What a cool moment
Any pictures of them before/during/after? As a dad of two boys, I can only imagine. Memories for life for both of them. So cool.

Just watching some other online clips. Richard, Josh and Josh were just amazing. Richard, what an animal behind the drums!! Ed’s voice is also in great shape!! Towards the end on Animal and Baba it sounded so strong! Shorter sets! 💪

I've seen hundreds of concerts over the last several decades, including several Pearl Jam shows.

Last night was one of my all-time favorite concerts (by anyone, not just PJ). They were on fire, flying by the seats of their pants, vulnerable,  intense, exuberant.

It was historic, and I'm so grateful that I was there. They gave us a gift by finding a way to go ahead with the show.

I was reluctant to go to the concert (I'm high risk and haven't seen much live music since things started to open up, and nothing with more than a couple of hundred in the audience). But I'm so glad I did.

I'm sorry Matt fell victim to this quagmire of a virus, and hope he's back soon.

But meanwhile, thanks Pearl Jam (& company)!

    Jim

Man this makes me anxious for future shows.  This was always a risk but as someone who is greatly anticipating Vegas I only hope things work out.

Totally. Stone, Mike or Ed get it, no show.....
Hate to say it, but I thing Ed is the only one who the show would definitely be cancelled for. Now, if 2 guys go down, then I think there is a problem. I could be wrong, but I believe the most difficult task Josh could have is to fill in for Matt, and he proved he could do that. Of course its not the same as having the 5 guys up there, it is more of a "the show must go on". There was an interview, I forget if Ed said it or Stone, but someone was talking about Josh and Andrew Watt and how those two can play all the PJ songs better than the guys in the band. Obviously it wasn't a 100% serious comment, but I do think Josh is the ultimate utility player. Ed is the only pitcher, and if he goes down, no game, but otherwise I think Josh can fill in anywhere and get through a 20-25 song set.
If the worst did come true and Ed went down, how quickly could they get Lenny Prado from Black Circle on a plane?

I thought this show was excellent and a lot of fun. When I heard them open with RITFW, I thought it was unusual. Little did I know then what an unusual night it was going to be! I was a little disappointed when Ed told us that Matt was out with COVID. I’m a big fan of Matt’s, having seen him perform with both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam a few times. I think he’s one of the great rock & roll drummers. After seeing the show, though, I agree with Ed’s comment that the show would be a memorable one (or words to that effect). I thought they all played with tremendous energy and enthusiasm. Mike was absolutely on fire. It occurred to me that all the band members stepped up their game to compensate for Matt’s absence. Highlights for me were hearing DTE, Black, Corduroy, and Animal. Although I wasn’t a big fan of Lukin before, they played the song with such enthusiasm that I really got into it. I was very happy to hear YLB again. I thought that all the drummers played great. Richard is really fun to watch. I was impressed that he was able to play tasty fills on songs I assume he wasn’t super familiar with. For me, I was OK with the songs they played from Gigaton. I like the album fine, but I prefer their older material honestly. I was hoping to hear Comes Then Goes, but maybe some other show. Thanks to the person who shared the YLB clip; I didn’t see the daughter greeting her father. That was very sweet. Take care of yourself, Matt, and get well soon. We missed you.

On my drive home I came to this same thought, and they truly did bring their best against all struggles to make it work! They sounded amazing and were in high spirits minus the engine. Very memorable!

The very end when his daughter jumps into his arms and he carries her off the stage. If that doesn't get your eyes leaking. Nothing will!

Well, this instantly just becomes the story of the tour — and there is such a duality to it.

On one hand, I think that any remaining doubters of MFC's importance and superhero status got proven wrong with this show. There is no way to understand someone's presence more than having the context of their absence, and that's what we got here. Hope he gets better soon so we can give him more love than ever.

On the other, Josh(x2!) and Richard did an AWESOME job and it was so cool to see them have this spotlight. Though they obviously were gonna simplify some things considering how fluid and quick their replacement was, it was fun to see the drums breathe a little more and have us hanging on the edge of our seat about it for the whole show.

There are gonna be a lot of San Francisco/Red Mosquito show comparisons (especially with the poetic RITFW opener), but I think this band member absence due to sickness ultimately carries a notably different response from the fans (though fuck those fans for booing Neil Young). In a way this is a really cool experiment to see play out, because suddenly the surface-level talk about set length and song selection fades into the background — EVERY song, no matter how monotonous, becomes interesting to watch when they're trying to fill in for a band member.

I'm excited to see how this changes the trajectory of what the band chooses to do with this tour! I think it'll only make for a more enticing experience for us fans.
