Depp V Heard (Defamation lawsuit)

What's up with trials being filmed and live-streamed in the US? What is the justification? It's crazy.

And isn't there a risk that cameras inside the room will affect witnesses and other people in there?

Also, Depps first role famously was in this - as mentioned in court:

"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"

I’m with you Jose. Who the fuck cares?! We hold these idiots too high up in society. Thats my opinion. Whether it’s the Kardashian obsession, or Will Smith getting away with assaulting someone on live TV, Weinstein getting away with his wonderful behavior for decades…. It’s a cesspool.

I don’t know how common it is to stream a trial. I don’t know anyone who has actually watched any of this live, just see a few highlights in the news.
Many times reporters request cameras and are denied, which is why courtroom sketches are a thing. And I never understood why those professional sketches always look like a third grader did it?
I remember the first trail of the century, the Menendez brothers, cameras were not allowed and that trial was talked about daily on the news. OJ was the first big trial I can remember being televised live.
But it really isn’t that common to have live access to a courtroom like that. Some of the police trials in the last several years because it had national interest, but not even all of those had live access.

I don’t think civil or criminal has anything to do with it. Criminal trials are public. So are most civil trials.
But people realize very quickly watching a trial isn’t like an episode of Law and Order. It’s slow and very boring. And lawyers and witnesses are horrible entertainers. There’s never that breakthrough moment where they just confess and give up. Makes for awful TV. Judges also can bad cameras if they think it’s going to be a distraction, but that’s pretty rare.
Almost no one actually watches these things. They just watch the highlights on TMZ or evening news.
But we (Americans) do have an odd fascination with Hollywood and celebrities. I don’t get it, ive never been into it. How many shows are there that are just basically folllowing around a B-lister star around for a day? Way more than we need.

That's how most television channels and productions exist today, nobody watches them. Well, "almost" nobody.

That’s about 10 times the amount as I would have predicted. Who actually watches this crap? Must just turn it on in nursing homes and get 100 viewers in 1 shot.
Still a relatively small number though, 400,000 out of 350 million.
I took the opening comment as implying why are Americans obsessed with watching these trials. After rereading it he didn’t say that. Just asked why do they allow it. I don’t think they should, but I think the justification is the trials are open to the public.

Court TV spawned a whole industry and yea, who watches this crap? Also, waaaay more viewing choices with massive cable expansion, Amazon and Netflix streaming, Hulu, etc., than when Court TV hit the screen. 400K viewers is top 15.

I’ll admit, I watched almost all of the Chauvin & Rottenhouse trials and I watched Maggie Three Names’ administrative court hearing. But the countless others? Stop glorifying scumbaggery and creating wannabes.

you massively underestimate how many people live and breathe celebrity. and something this salacious? a gorgeous movie star being accused of taking a dump on his bed? my god. that's about as gross(to me) and engrossing (to others) as can be. I'm actually surprised that number isn't a lot higher. but I'm guessing it's because the current generation knows they'll get all the 5 second clips on socials so they don't have to watch it live. back in the day, we either watched it live, or caught the best bits on entertainment tonight.

Seems she has the entire internet against her, including the entire "Laywers on youtube community".

But I find it hard to believe someone would make up that crazy of a story. As in, take it to that extreme. And also tell stories involving other people like his security staff, an airplane full of people etc. If one would lie to lie, wouldn't one keep the lies in settings where it would have been just the two of them?

At the same time, why would Depp sue her if "guilty", knowing all of this would be told in front of the world? A Hail Mary to get the court of public opinion on his side again (Which he seems to be winning)?

Yeah that is why I am really interested in hearing Depp's attorney question her.

I always thought that her secret video of him in the kitchen slamming doors was interesting in that he did not physically threaten her at all and she did not appear afraid. It would seem like a situation where she would be begging him to "please settle down" knowing that she was going to get punched if he kept going.

Maybe it's me growing up three brothers, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary with Depp in that kitchen. He kicks some cabinets and throws some stuff when angry? Lucky people have not seen my and my brothers play GoldenEye 64...

Also, that video is owned by TMZ. And who can sell the video rights to that video to TMZ other then the one who shot the video (?).

Such a weird system, having a long trial with professionals who have studied law and then throw it over to some ordinary people to interpret the law without any knowledge of it or experience with it.

I get the "idea" behind it. And I am not sure what a perfect system would be. But this is just weird.

Such a weird system, having a long trial with professionals who have studied law and then throw it over to some ordinary people to interpret the law without any knowledge of it or experience with it.

the jury doesnt interept the law. they weigh the evidence given and witness credibility against the instructions given by the judge.
