Catalog your music collection for insurance purposes!

I just mentioned this elsewhere but thought it worth noting in a separate thread. I have my LP's and 7" singles listed on Discogs as my "collection". It's pretty accurate, down to many of them listed specific to the run out groove matrix for accuracy. I asked my insurance agent if this would suffice as evidence of ownership in case of flood, fire, theft, etc. I was told that along with some photographs of my general collection it does, indeed, verify ownership of my collection for insurance purposes.
It's a lot of work to catalog your collection, but also a lot of comfort. I dread the thought of losing my collection, but if I do, at least I would have some compensation to start rebuilding it. Check with you insurance agent to see if you can get this kind of coverage. It's worth the effort!

I know mine requires a monitored smoke alarm (integrated into a burglar alarm is acceptable) if a collection of anything crosses a certain thresholdI have one anyway so no big deal but there always seems to be stipulations on valuable stuff.Pretty sure I couldn’t replace my collection in a timely manner though even if the payout was the discogs max value. Most sellers list their stuff above the max anyway. My concern would be exactly what they would pay out. You won’t be made whole, no way but it’s better than nothingPost edited by Cropduster-80 on0

Yeah, same here. I doubt I could ever replace my entire collection. The insurance money would give me a good start, and I could live with a rebuilt collection, but I do have some LP's that would be either hard to track down or take too much of a chunk out of the insurance paid out.
But like you say, something is better than nothing and cataloguing would likely make that "something" a larger pay-out.

It's a good thought, one that's crossed my mind about my poster collection (def. worth more than my vinyl collection at them moment)
I have most of my posters up on collectionzz.com, but should reach out to my agent to verify what else I need for coverage on them.0 -
We did this when we bought our current hoMe back in 2017. Great idea.
I LOVE MUSIC.

If I collect catalogs, is it a good idea to catalog my collections?0

On the flip side of things: I've unloaded/donated my CD collection this past year. Went from 1200+ down to about 600 now. With the aim of getting down to 0 in 2022.
It's felt great, relieved to have the space back and to clear out the dust collectors.0 -

Good move!
I don't have a ton of CD's but since being semi-retired and not driving much (which was mostly when I listened to them) I've unloaded some CDs as well. Can't say the same for LPs though!

If you're seeing double in the AM, don't catalog the same LP twice if you only own one!

I try to put my stuff in discogs, but it's mind boggling to be accurate.0
