Soundgarden are one of my favorite bands, but this was a no-brainer. Tom Petty & the HB's mean a lot to me and their music has been the soundtrack to my life.
    I LOVE MUSIC.

I just realized that I voted for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and I have no idea who the Heartbreakers even are, Did anybody else just do that or am I the only one?

My best advice is to run out and buy Damn the Torpedoes.  Start there and keep going- you're in for some great music experiences.
Eddie is a fan as well:

I actually watched the Classic Albums doc about Damn the Torpedoes last night. Great documentary going over the making of that album. VERY talented musicians in the Heartbreakers.
You could have a spirited argument over the Heartbreakers vs the E Street Band.
That could be an interesting poll: Best backing band. Heartbreakers, E St., The Band, Crazy Horse, Double Trouble, The Wailers, The Revolution, The Mothers of Invention, The Attractions... who else?
The Earthlings - greatest since Feb 2022.

I love both Petty and Soundgarden but for me it was pretty easy. Cornell has my favorite voice in rock n roll.  Plus three albums that are hard to top.

    Badmotorfinger
    Louder Than Love
    Superunknown

Although these do stack up well against them

    Wildflowers
    Damn the Torpedoes
    Full Moon Fever

Cant go wrong with either vote in this final IMO

If you have a Petty Best of album it's really good.  If you go album by album you have 2 songs that are good and the rest meh.  I bought both box sets hoping to uncovers some gems and sadly I did not...

Soundgarden has some great albums where you listen from front to back and it's all good.

Not my ideal 2 for the finals but it was interesting.
Who would you chose as the best American band?
I would chose Neil Young and Crazy Horse but I think Neil's dual citizenship kept them out of the contest.  Same with The Jimi Hendrix Experience being an international band.  If those two are eliminated, my choice would be underappreciated The Dream Syndicate.

Thanks again to @MedozK for these polls, they’ve been fun!

I would do, not necessarily in this order..

    Bruce and the E Street
    TP and the HB
    CCR
    Doors
    PJ
    Dead

I also think DMB has a great argument to be on the list. They are more polarizing than the others,  but they have a massive catalog,  tremendous deep cuts,  huge fan base,  touring animals,  and their music is so unique.  It is a product of so many influences,  from jazz to Stevie Wonder, African music and the Dead.  And no one can say they are not masters of their instruments

And I don't have NY and Jimi on the list for the reasons you point out,  not because they aren't amazing.

Easy vote. If you asked a million people who the. Greatest American band of all time is, no one is even remotely thinking Soundgarden. Absolutely ridiculous they made it this far.  Time to face the truth.

So you're shocked they made it this far in a Pearl Jam forum? Granted if they made it that far in another group yeah i'd be surprised but not here.
Meh, like I said two rounds ago (or was it three)... the Seattle bias is strong here.

And for those saying I'm angry.  I'm not angry, but it's just beyond silly to think Soundgarden is a top 2 American band of all time.

DMB?  Dave Matthews I assume?  Great musician, excellent band, but oddly idiosyncratic song writing.

Yes and yes.  That's why they are not everyone's taste (unlike someone like Tom who is very accessible), but it also makes them very unique.  That's why I don't necessarily consider them on the list broadley,  but they are absolutely there for me personally. I don't know if I've seen them or PJ more times but both are over 50.

I'm sure some around here would put Phish up there too. But they also have an accessibility issue.

I prefer Soundgarden, but Petty likely has the superior catalogue.

Still sad that REM dropped as early as they did. Even with a stellar career, they're still insanely underappreciated and undervalued.

of course. but my generation might end up voting the Hip. not a lot of fans of the guess who. I think a lot of people try to claim Neil as canadian, but he hasn't been "really canadian" for decades, and rush is very polarizing.

there's actually so many great canadian bands, you could probably do different ones; a classic rock one and a modern one. But so very few would be known to people here.

I would be more interested having these bands in there to see what the folks around the globe participating in these frivolous and fun polls think.  With so much foreign opinion, it is seems highly unlikely the Hip win, unless Jeff Ament’s Hip/Gord Downie fandom carries heavy weight around here (possibly?).  It would be interesting to see where the discussions go.

Since these polls are Mendozk’s baby, I would not begin one on my own but as stated in a previous thread, would be very interested in what bands he would include.  I have a hunch The Band, Rush and Arcade Fire would do very well.

I think Celine Dion would take it, lol. But then again, Alanis Morissette is God - at least according to Kevin Smith. And can’t forget about Barenaked Ladies, BTO, my current favorite band Metric, Crash Test Dummies, Our Lady Peace,  Arcade Fire, Tegan and Sara, Steppenwolf, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. But yeah in all seriousness the Hip would win.
