Easy vote. If you asked a million people who the. Greatest American band of all time is, no one is even remotely thinking Soundgarden. Absolutely ridiculous they made it this far.  Time to face the truth.

I just realized that I voted for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and I have no idea who the Heartbreakers even are, Did anybody else just do that or am I the only one?

I love the anger over this.
Easy vote for me.  I don't think either would be in any conversation I would have for greatest American band of all time.
However, I have two options to choose from.

I should've voted for Soundgarden. I know ALL of their names.

My best advice is to run out and buy Damn the Torpedoes.  Start there and keep going- you're in for some great music experiences.

I actually watched the Classic Albums doc about Damn the Torpedoes last night. Great documentary going over the making of that album. VERY talented musicians in the Heartbreakers.

You could have a spirited argument over the Heartbreakers vs the E Street Band.

That could be an interesting poll: Best backing band. Heartbreakers, E St., The Band, Crazy Horse, Double Trouble, The Wailers, The Revolution, The Mothers of Invention, The Attractions... who else?

For me,  Tom Petty is more than just the sum of his songs.  Tom was the "loser", who got lucky.  I always thought that song was the perfect metaphor for his life.  You know he wasn't popular in high school,  a skinny kid who grew up in the old South where long hair and rock and roll wasn't exactly popular in the 60s and 70s. His father abused him because he was frail and not an athlete.  But he fought through it. Gainesville FL was not exactly music central.

Then he went on to write about ordinary themes that we could all relate to,  and the songs were extraordinary.  That was his power, writing music that people could relate to,  across musical styles.  Writing them without pretentiousness,  rather with humility.  His catalog is vast, deep and varied.  His live shows were fantastic as they were exceptional performers.  Maybe everyone doesn't love Tom,  but it's impossible to dislike him.

Tom Petty is so boring to listen to.

The first Soundgarden albums are just too screamingy though. But they do have the more mellowmagical Superunknown and Down on the Upside.

You hit a lot of them.  How about "The Experience" (Jimi)?  I honestly can't think of anyone else.
