AstroWorld Festival Disaster

8 people dead after the crowd surged forward during a Travis Scott performance.  The surge happened when Drake came on stage.

As we all know, this kind of thing has happened in the past.  Feel horrible for all of the victims and families involved.

In 2021, there has to be a way that we can avoid this at large music festivals

Sick to my stomach reading this this morning. There are some vids out there earlier in the day that show a chaotic scene that security could not handle.

If that’s true, then it makes this entire thing even worse if they knew they had a crowd they couldn’t control and still decided to proceed

There are videos of emergency vehicles trying to make their way through the crowd and people jumping on them.

Not sure but he (Travis Scott) has a history of encouraging his fans to ignore the normal concert protocols.

Those videos are tough to watch.
    Looked like mostly young people.
There seemed to be ZERO organization. Security was just trying to trip people as they ran by. Farcical.

I read an article that said that there was an Astroworld concert in 2019 that had all the same security and gate issues, with people rushing the gates, forcing their way through and hopping over the turnstyles, though luckily no deaths. The organizers learned nothing from that experience.

I had a lengthy comment ready to go but deleted it... I'm just really sad about all this.

Regardless of organization, genre, history, whatever - kids died here by just going to a concert.

Terrible for the family and friends of the kids who died.  Part of the blame is obviously security, but part of it also has to be on the behavior of the spectators.
Personally, I don't get the appeal of that kind of show in the first place.

Do people run like that when the gates open for a pj show?

I heard the same as the OP, not sure if it’s true, that the crowd came from another stage where someone just finished and they were trying to get to the front of the main stage for Drake…..only heard it once though and haven’t had time to reinvestigate but I will.

I’ve been to many festivals and it happens but never that bad obviously.  Anyone at ACL when Eminem and PJ were there?  Thousands of us were stuck behind the Lorde crowd trying to get to the main stage…..it was difficult to breath because I’m only 5’1”.  It was a scary experience for sure. This is such a tragedy.

Actually did remind me of Wrigley 13 after the rain delay. We were in the pit and they put us in the VIP backstage area for the delay. A few hours later when the all clear was given it was pretty bad, and people who were clearly not wearing a pit wristband were jumping the fence right in front of security and they didn’t even care at that point.
Wasn’t this bad, but still crazy.

These are people that are not paying trying to get through security for the most part it looks like. They are doing this with the blessing of the event organizer  and headliner Travis Scott. People definitely run more of a controlled manner for the PJ/EV fests I have been too. One person runs and everyone does. This is after scanning in though and not kick the front door down.

Here is his tweet after the event sold out back in the spring.
