Facebook is Facebook by any name.  For me, it's a useful way to keep in touch with friends, and nothing more.  I don't go there for "news", lol.

I would hope your investments are more diversified than relying on a social media stock for retirement.

Common practice for a company which is become stagnant. The fact is, FB has become “old people” social media and their growth is slowing. They have taken a beating in the court of public opinion over the misinformation they allow to be shared as “news” on the platform.

When investor confidence begins to wane, and stock prices began to slide while you aren’t showing growth, rebranding is one of the tools often used to create some “buzz”.   Meta is new and fresh, unlike FB (and it’s users).  I am sure they have some other plans to remain relevant under the new corporate name.

Google did the same thing in 2015, rebranding to Alphabet. Happens a lot tbh

I unfortunately grew up poor and never had anyone teach me about money retirement etc.  Stocks pfft...more like negative net worth. Now that I have a basic clue about personal stocks 401ks etc it is very clear that I will likely never be able to retire barring a windfall of some sort.   As for the comment,  This is just an argument I often see when people are defending old dinosaur companies and practices that are obsolete...thought I would post it here to see what kind of reactions it would get.

Lots of people grew up poor. Most people who say they grew up poor still had a standard of living higher than 90% of the world population.
No one really teaches kids about money because not many people understand money, particularly the working class. It’s unfortunate because it is really not complicated. The industry makes it SEEM complicated to rob you of most of your retirement income (mutual funds, high MERs, etc).  It’s remarkable how few people know the difference between a financial advisor and a fiduciary.
Anyways, my comment was also a general reaction to people who make those comments. Basically, stop subsidizing corporations who are “too big to fail” and let them fail. People who are not diversified in their portfolio will suffer the greatest, but that isn’t anyone’s fault but their own. I didn’t think you were all in on Meta. 🤙

Seems to me the younger crowd (warning: only old people use stupid terms like the younger crowd) are more apt to use Instagram.  If I'm not mistaken, the latest trend in popular social media platforms among the younger crowd in order of popularity is:
    1. Instagram
    2. Twitter
    3. Facebook

    Does that sound right?

I believe TikTok is popular among the youngest folks and is growing exponentially. Instagram is owned by Meta and is popular, however I was
unsure if the platform had the same cache as it pertains to advertising revenue. I was on IG once for a day to educate myself and could not figure out what was so appealing, but then again I’m a month shy of 47.
I remember when my stepsons were on Snapchat consistently 5 or so years ago. Now that they are 21 and 19 respectively I am not sure where they spend their social media time anymore.
Keep in mind. I look at this all with mild curiosity as a “mostly” passive investor. I’m not even sure what yearly dividends (if any) Meta pays to investors  My single investments are strictly with Canadian banks with historical dividends of 6% or higher and a demonstrated history of rising.

I've heard of those two but am not familiar with them.  It seems a little odd to me to have so many of the social media platforms but I guess it's like any fad- each generation wants their own distinct calling card so to speak. But it also seems like each generation only last a few years now!

I guess that's nice but the information has probably all been used up already...

    doubt they will.
Well they publicly announced it and for them to go back on that will have some serious fall out from users.

they've made a variety of promises over the years. I struggle to recall one they've kept...

and how do we verify? they have data farms all of the country.
When the FCC or govt comes knocking again?

I'm sure they will collect datat on their other platforms still as FB is most likely not the age demographic they are looking for?
