Here is an example of law enforcement not giving up.  This wasn't in the news for 44 years but it is in the news today.

Part of the reason why I don't buy the "white girl syndrome" argument.
white girl syndrome isn't about law enforcement not doing their jobs, it's about the public/media attention certain cases get.
But this got attention 44 years later...that was my main point.  A lot of cases don't get attention because there are too many unknowns.  In Gabby's case the boyfriend's behavior makes it news.
Key paragraph below. Had the perp gone to his grave without divulging the extent of his crimes and where and approximately when his victims met their fate, this would still be a cold case and uninvestigated. It’s about what happens in the crucial first 48-72 hours and later whether the media picks up on it.

He targeted women, often of marginalized and vulnerable communities, many of whom were involved in prostitution or suffering from drug addiction and whose bodies sometimes went unidentified and their deaths were not investigated.

it's a serial killer case. those ALWAYS get attention regardless of victim. these two situations really aren't comparable.

Anyone hear of any of these three cases prior to WaPo writing about them yesterday? First I heard about them.

Perhaps as a result, lesser-known missing-people cases — particularly Black and Indigenous people — have begun to see a boost. On social media, the Gabby Petito hashtag now carries posts with their names. Names such as Lauren “El” Cho, a 30-year-old musician last seen June 28 in California’s Yucca Valley; Jelani Day, a 25-year-old Illinois State University graduate student reported missing Aug. 25 from Bloomington, Ill.; and Daniel Robinson, a 24-year-old geologist who vanished from a Phoenix-area job site

same...check out that Lauren Spierer story I posted.  Usually the last person that sees the victim is involved somehow.  In her case the last person says he kept an eye on her as she walked from his place to her place.

A few years ago a guy was arrested (in Bloomington...same city) for killing a student that disappeared under similar circumstances. The theory is that he might have killed Spierer but the story kind of died out. He picked up a drunk girl very late at night and took her to a remote location and killed her. He fucked up by leaving her cell phone behind.

Spierer was said to be very intoxicated that night. She had left her cell phone and shoes at a local bar.

The guys that she was partying with should have walked her home. Very sad.

yeah I read that story you posted. so odd. especially the step mom's story that changed from "checking in on her" to "sleeping in her room".

Its tough for sure.  I don't recall the last big case where a white girl went missing, so there's probably thousands of missing white people that never got media attention either.

On one side, I think there might of been some uniqueness to this story.  Someone that a tiny bit of online fame, so had some following.  When you look at the story, they know who the perp is pretty much right away, and it turns into a manhunt story.     So many missing cases I don't even think you get that kind of info.   People missing without a trace makes for less of a story?

On the flip side the very rare time a missing person case gets international attention it does tend to be a white person.   So I see the other side of the argument too.

This story reminds me a little of something that happened her in BC a few years ago.  There were some random murders in the north part of our province (where it's remote and there's not a lot of police), but then it turned out they weren't so random.  They were committed by some youths from the Island I live on.   Then there faces started getting blasted on TV, and there would be signs of them moving Eastward across the country.   Then they disappeared completely.   Eventually it turned out they ran off in backcountry (Manitoba)? and offed themselves.

But I think it was intrigue of the story that got it media attention.  Even though both the victims and the perps were white.. it peaked peoples interest.

I guess I don't like thinking everything is racist, but I guess sometimes it is :(

I heard this morning that the warrant relates to him using someone else's debit card.  Then I heard an interview where the reporter mentioned that it was Gabby's card that Brian had used to withdraw $1,000.

Didn't mean to be.  I think I was alluding to more or less I tend to think the best of people, but often learn after they were pieces of shit.  I always felt that was more my naive natures (Which probably comes from white privledge and lack of alternate point of view).
